Ability to Obtain Public Trust
We are currently searching for a Phlebotomist to provide support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is a full-time, on-site opportunity based in Bethesda, MD. Schedule is Monday through Friday 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM.
What You Will Do:
Functions as a Health Technician (Phlebotomist) in an active clinic where samples are drawn for both clinical testing and for research protocols. Collaborates with doctors, head nurses, and other nursing staff on a daily basis. Communication is necessary to clarify requests for blood draws, explain laboratory procedures and policies, or to resolve problems with requests or specimens.
Draws blood specimens from outpatients in the Clinic and inpatients on all nursing units according to standard operation procedures. Observes “Standard Precautions” during all patient contact, due to the large number of bloods drawn with blood-borne pathogens.
Observes patients while performing venipuncture for any sign of anxiety, light-headedness or fainting and reports to the nurse any signs of bleeding or abnormal conditions.
Collects finger sticks and other micro-volume samples that require specialized equipment and skillful techniques which may be different from routine sample processing.
Processes specimens by centrifuging, separating, measuring volume, and aliquoting according to standard operation procedures.
Follows all safety guidelines for the disposal of sharps as well as adheres to all patient isolation procedures.
Performs complex accession routines to match tests requested, to number and type of specimen tubes received, to properly account for all orders on the patient.
Identifies problems regarding specimens or orders to patient care providers, e.g. specimens that arrive unlabeled, mislabeled, insufficient quantity for tests requested, or collected in wrong tube; and contacts the nursing units or physician directly for specimens that are rejected in order to direct the patient care physician to recollect the specimen as needed.
Instructs patients on procedures for proper collection of midstream, clean-catch urine specimens to prevent contamination of normal flora.
Participates in continuing education as needed to maintain competency in all job duties.
Participates in improvement projects for quality assurance such as review and collection of data to determine phlebotomy draws compared to nurse draws and number of errors.
Trains ancillary groups such as medical students that may be involved in drawing research specimens.
Collects data to track wait time for patients in Outpatient Clinic from time of sign-in until blood is drawn and suggests improvements to shorten time.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
What You Will Need:
High school diploma and certification as a Phlebotomist (ASCP) or similar.
Minimum of ONE (1) year of experience performing venipuncture and urine collection procedures.
Must possess a high skill level in performing venipunctures due to the complexity of patient orders and disease states.
