The Alberta Public Service works to build a stronger province for current and future generations. We make a difference in the lives of Albertans through rewarding and diverse career opportunities. For more information, please visit: https://www.alberta.ca/about-the-alberta-public-service.
The Alberta Human Rights Commission works with Albertans to promote awareness of, and appreciation for, human rights and diversity. Its overall goal is to develop inclusive communities in which all Albertans can participate in the social, economic, and cultural life of the province without discrimination.
The Alberta Human Rights Act establishes the Alberta Human Rights Commission to carry out functions under the Act. The Commission is an independent Commission created by the Government of Alberta. The Commission has a two-fold mandate: to foster equality and to reduce discrimination. It fulfills this mandate through public education and community initiatives, resolution and settlement of complaints of discrimination, and human rights tribunal hearings.
Role Responsibilities
Are you a detail-oriented legal professional who thrives on research, analysis, and supporting fair decision-making? Join the Alberta Human Rights Commission as a Tribunal Legal Assistant and play a key role in supporting the Tribunal’s mandate to foster equality and reduce discrimination. This is an opportunity to contribute to meaningful human rights work while helping ensure Tribunal processes are fair, efficient, and legally sound.
Reporting to the Chief of the Commission and Tribunals, you will play an integral role in advancing the Alberta Human Rights Commission's mandate by supporting fair, informed, and effective Tribunal processes. Working closely with Tribunal Legal Counsel and the Tribunal Office, you will apply your legal research, analytical, and organizational expertise to support complex human rights matters, prepare legal materials, and contribute to the consistency, accuracy, and procedural integrity of Tribunal proceedings. You will also help strengthen organizational knowledge through the development of legal resources, templates, and tools that support operational excellence across the Tribunal.
Your key responsibilities include:
Conducting legal research and analyzing legislation, case law, precedent decisions, and emerging legal trends to support Tribunal matters.
Preparing case summaries, research memoranda, legal briefs, reports, and background materials to support informed decision-making.
Compiling, organizing, and summarizing evidence, submissions, legal authorities, and case materials to support case progression and legal review.
Providing legal and procedural support during Tribunal proceedings, including information retrieval, issue identification, procedural observations, and post-hearing summaries.
Developing and maintaining a centralized legal knowledge repository, reference materials, and training resources to support operational consistency and institutional knowledge.
Creating, reviewing, and updating standardized legal templates and tools that promote efficiency, consistency, and administrative best practices.
Identifying and escalating procedural issues, information gaps, and record inconsistencies to support the timely progression of Tribunal matters.
What you’ll bring to the role:
Analytical and research expertise to assess complex legal information and identify key issues.
Strong communication skills to produce clear, concise written materials and convey information effectively.
Sound judgment and problem-solving abilities to support informed decisions and manage priorities.
Exceptional organization and attention to detail to ensure accuracy and procedural integrity.
Adaptability and collaboration to navigate changing priorities and contribute to a supportive team environment.

Creative Problem Solving: Evaluating complex issues, applying sound judgment, and identifying practical solutions that support fair and effective outcomes.
