Description
The Kentucky Department of Corrections (DOC), Division of Adult Institutions operates 13 correctional
facilities that house Kentucky's adult inmate population. The mission of DOC is to protect the citizens of the
Commonwealth of Kentucky and to provide a safe, secure, and humane environment for staff and offenders in carrying out the
mandates of the legislative and judicial processes; and, to provide opportunities for offenders to acquire
skills which facilitate non-criminal behavior.
The Correctional Farm Manager at Blackburn Correctional Complex supervises a crew of inmates in the farm operations area of the institution.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Directs and oversees the farm crew leaders and inmates in a correctional farm operation.
Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of departmental employees and inmates in all aspects of the farm operation.
Assures confinement of inmate crew(s) to farm operation.
Assigns the acreage to be used for field crops, garden, pasture, or livestock programs.
Determines the inventory of animals needed for the institution's requirements.
Assigns farm vehicles, equipment, and fences to farm personnel to make repairs and replacements.
Trains departmental personnel and inmates in the various phases of the farm operations.
Coordinates the farm activities with other institutional activities.
Prepares purchase orders, farm production reports, inventory records, and institutional American Correctional Association (ACA) files.
Maintains maintenance of farm equipment and buildings for proper operation.
Investigates work orders for equipment, repairs and maintenance.
Directly oversees the operations of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation Program (TRF).
Works closely with TRF staff to provide proper care for horses being housed on the farm.
Assists with maintaining the barns, stables, and any other structures that provide cover, shelter, or lodging for the horses.
Assists with the purchase, delivery, or pickup of food, supplies, and any other items associated with TRF.
Provides support to education staff to carry out daily classroom activities as well as any hands-on training in regards to the
handling and care of horses.
Assists in the supervision and management of any inmates participating in educational activities relating to the farm or TRF.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION:
High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:
Five years of agricultural or landscaping/grounds keeping experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE:
A bachelor's degree in agriculture or a related field will substitute for the required education and four years of the required five years of experience.

Working Conditions
May risk injuries associated with working with animals and with farm machinery and tools. Work is performed in all types of weather conditions.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
