DEPARTMENT OF GAMING

The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) regulates tribal gaming, event wagering, fantasy sports, horse racing and pari-mutuel/simulcast wagering, and unarmed combat sports; investigates illegal off-reservation activities; and provides and supports prevention, education, and treatment programs for people and families affected by problem gambling through its Division of Problem Gambling (DPG).

Job Summary:

The Communications Intern will support strategic communications, marketing, and public outreach efforts for the Arizona Department of Gaming and Division of Problem Gambling, working directly under the Marketing Strategist. This role provides hands-on experience in digital government communications, with a focus on public education and stakeholder and community engagement. The Communications Intern will also assist with content creation, social media management, website updates, marketing outreach, and general communications projects to help maintain a consistent and effective message. This position will have learning opportunities, consisting of; exposure to public sector communications and regulatory messaging, hands-on experience with marketing campaigns and brand standards, development of multimedia production and digital marketing skills, and experience analyzing engagement data and campaign performance. This position will be a 16 week, part time, fall semester internship beginning on August 24 and will require 10 - 20 hours per week based on the student's schedule. The supervisor will coordinate with the intern to ensure in-office hours are scheduled each week and allow for flexibility to ensure minimum hours are met each week to complete the internship.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

All work, including remote work, should be performed within Arizona unless an exception is properly authorized in advance.

Job Duties:

● Draft and edit content for social media, website, newsletters, and press materials.
● Assist in identifying and pursuing paid media and marketing opportunities.
● Assist in planning and scheduling social media posts across platforms.
● Monitor engagement metrics and compile basic performance reports.
● Support the development of marketing and communications campaigns and collaborate throughout the organization to identify print resources (such as one-pagers) that would advance ADG’s mission; assist with creating marketing materials.
● Provide general administrative and project management support for communications projects and events.
● Other duties as assigned as related to the position. (typically, 5% - 10%)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

● Public relations and marketing strategy.
● Social media platforms.
● Content creation and development.
● Understanding of performance metrics.
● Basic principles of communications.
● General understanding of government communications standards.
● Brand standards.

Skills in:

● Writing, editing, and proofreading clear, concise, and audience-appropriate content.
● Adapting messaging across different platforms.
● The use of social media management and scheduling tools.
● Creating visual graphics using Adobe products or similar products.
● Organize tasks, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines.
● Communicating professionally in a team environment.

Ability to:

● Translate regulatory information into clear public-facing messaging.
● Maintain consistency in tone, voice, and branding across communications.
● Work independently while receiving direction and feedback.
● Think critically and contribute ideas to campaigns and initiatives.
● Bring creative and critical thoughts and contribute ideas to campaigns and initiatives.
● Pay attention to detail.

Selective Preference(s):

● Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field.
