The Southwestern Public Service Company Area Engineering Intern will work alongside experienced engineers to support the reliability, safety, and operation of the electric distribution system across the Southwestern Public Service (SPS) service territory. The intern will gain hands-on experience with real-world utility engineering projects involving power system reliability, protection and coordination, outage analysis, system modeling, and capital improvement initiatives.
Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Support electric distribution reliability and outage investigations, including CEMI/DEMI analysis
Assist with protection and coordination studies for distribution feeders and equipment
Support capital project development and distribution system improvement initiatives
Participate in field visits to substations, distribution facilities, and construction projects
Utilize utility engineering software and databases to evaluate system performance and operating conditions
Collaborate with engineers and technical staff to solve real-world electric utility challenges
This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.
Minimum Requirements:
Current student, Sophomore or higher
Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering
Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy
