The Department of Clinical Sciences mission is to assure the health and productivity of animals to meet societal needs through high quality educational programs for professional veterinary medical students, graduate veterinarians, and the public through a faculty and veterinary medical center of excellence, and to advance and disseminate comparative biomedical knowledge in an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration.
The Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery Service at Colorado State University has rapidly expanded in recent years with growth in the number and complexity of procedures we offer. More than half of our procedural caseload comes from outside the state of Colorado, many of which are enrolled in clinical trials. In selecting these cases, we virtually review several hundred cases from across the US each year. Coordinating this caseload is a considerable effort and research associate with expertise in clinical research and with a strong knowledge of cardiology is needed to facilitate further growth.
Position Summary:
This position will manage protocol compliance for patients who are included in a clinical study, assist in patient recruitment for clinical trials and clinical research, and provide assistance to faculty, residents, and staff during the care of such patients which may include patient receiving, collecting samples and data entry, and various study-related administrative tasks such as shipping, ordering, and updating clinical trials patient rosters. This person is also responsible for maintaining study binders for all patients enrolled into clinical trials and ensuring that they are complete. The position will also manage inquiries to the Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery Service for advanced procedures including transcatheter edge-to-edge repair of the mitral valve and advanced surgical procedures. This position will collect medical records and cardiac imaging for the case as well as communicate with referring cardiologists, referring veterinarians, and pet owners. These inquiries will be kept organized in a spreadsheet and the research associate will work closely with the medical team to respond in a timely fashion to the inquiries. This position is fully in-person.

Essential Job Duties:
Assess patient eligibility for clinical studies by evaluating inclusion and exclusion criteria, obtaining informed consent from owners, and responding to study-related questions from owners and referring veterinarians.
Maintain documentation by entering data into paper and electronic systems, maintaining patient records and databases, cataloging multidisciplinary case reviews.
Coordinate study logistics by overseeing the shipment of study-related samples to the appropriate location, ordering laboratory and study supplies as needed, and overseeing storage of study related samples and images.
Support study operations through communication with study sponsors and collaborating institutions, managing study-related resources, and adjusting patient invoices to reflect study-covered expenses.
Assemble study information packets and patient study binders, compile and maintain medical records and data capture forms, and adjust patient invoices to reflect charges covered by clinical studies.
Communication with study sponsors when additional study supplies are needed and communication with study personnel at other institutions where the study is being conducted.
Organize patient inquiries for advanced procedures such as transcatheter edge-to-edge repair of the mitral valve or open-heart surgery.
Maintain up-to-date medical records and cardiac images are collected prior to referral and kept organized and collect follow-up medical records and cardiac images post-surgery from referring cardiologist for facilitation of long-term outcome studies.

Minimum Education:
Applicants must have at least one of the following post-baccalaureates (or equivalent) experience level.
B.A./B.S. in a related field.
3 or more years of relevant professional experience.
OR
A master’s degree with no experience.
AND
Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and customer service.
Exemplary organizational and time management skills.
Strong interests in clinical research.
Experience in data input and management.
Experience and knowledge of the use of Microsoft applications and other spreadsheet applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
Experience with data analysis, scientific writing, or specialized research techniques relevant to the hiring lab.
Able to learn how to use advanced imaging programs and conversant with technology and the management of large volumes of medical imaging data.
Registered or licensed veterinary technician.
