General Surgery Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship
The General Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center offers a 12-month structured postgraduate education designed to equip Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants with the specialized clinical and surgical expertise required to deliver high-quality care across a broad range of surgical subspecialties.
As a nationally recognized academic medical center and the clinical enterprise of UT Southwestern Medical Center, the General Surgery APP Fellowship provides fellows with an exceptional learning environment focused on clinical excellence, multidisciplinary collaboration, evidence-based practice, and personalized mentorship. The program's comprehensive curriculum spans the continuum of surgical care, from preoperative evaluation and operative management through postoperative recovery and longitudinal patient care.
During the fellowship, APP fellows are full-time employees of UT Southwestern Medical Center and receive a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, continuing education funds, and access to low-cost medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. Fellows are offered a competitive annual salary of $95,000. The 2027-2028 General Surgery APP Fellowship cohort will begin on Monday, April 5, 2027.

To be considered for the fellowship, applicants must submit a complete application by the deadline. Only completed applications will be reviewed. Veterans are encouraged to apply.

Personal Statement: A statement describing your interest in the General Surgery APP Fellowship Program and how it aligns with your future career goals.
Two Letters of Recommendation: Letters reflecting clinical performance and professional potential.
At least one letter must be from a physician or APP with an active medical license.
New graduates should include a letter from a program director or faculty member.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of a master's degree in nursing as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with RNFA from an accredited advanced practice education program OR graduate of a physician assistant master's program accredited by ARC-PA prior to the fellowship program start date.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION
Current Texas Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification (AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG) with RNFA or Texas Physician Assistant license and national board certification.
Texas licensure must be obtained by January 15, 2027.
Authorization for prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing (as applicable).
Current BLS and ACLS certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross, per UT Southwestern policy.
EXPERIENCE
Program admission is open to new graduates or experienced Acute Care NPs with RNFA certification or Physician Assistants who meet the program eligibility requirements.
JOB DUTIES
Perform comprehensive patient evaluations and develop treatment plans in collaboration with the surgical team.
Assist in the operating room, including but not limited to performing surgical first assist duties and providing intraoperative care.
Conduct daily patient rounds, document progress notes, and communicate with patients and their families regarding the patient's care plan.
Participate in on-call coverage as assigned by the surgical team.
Attend educational sessions and conferences to enhance knowledge of surgical subspecialties and patient care.
Collaborate with other members of the healthcare team to ensure safe and effective patient care.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care in the electronic health record.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Accuracy and ability to exercise considerable judgment.
Ability to maintain current customer service, clinical, and technical skills.
Ability to identify opportunities and provide suggestions for improvements in departmental policies, procedures, and protocols.
Proficient use of the electronic medical record in the delivery of care.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily in a clinical environment. The incumbent may be exposed to body fluids and infectious diseases.
Any qualifications considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimum requirements require prior approval of the Vice President for Human Resources Administration or their designee.
