About Your Role
The Construction Inspector is responsible for conducting comprehensive field inspections across airport building and terminal construction projects. This position ensures that construction activities are completed in accordance with approved contract documents, applicable building codes, safety regulations, LAWA requirements, and project-specific standards.The Construction Inspector will monitor daily field activities, document construction progress, identify deficiencies and safety concerns, review project documentation, verify completed work, and coordinate with contractors, engineers, testing agencies, and project stakeholders.
The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of large-scale building construction, excellent documentation skills, and the ability to independently interpret plans, specifications, submittals, RFIs, change orders, and other construction documents.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive daily inspections of building, terminal, and related airport construction activities.
Verify that work is performed in accordance with approved plans, specifications, contract requirements, building codes, safety regulations, and LAWA proprietary standards.
Review and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, specifications, submittals, requests for information, change orders, and other contract documents.
Prepare detailed daily inspection reports that clearly document the who, what, when, where, and how of observed construction activities.
Accurately document project progress, contractor activities, labor and equipment, completed quantities, deficiencies, safety concerns, and corrective actions.
Identify construction deficiencies and nonconforming work and communicate findings to the appropriate contractor and project representatives.
Monitor corrective work and verify that identified deficiencies are resolved in accordance with project requirements.
Support special inspection and material-testing activities by coordinating with engineers, contractors, laboratories, and third-party inspection agencies.
Track and document time-and-material work, field changes, extra work, and installed job quantities when assigned.
Measure and verify completed work for accuracy and compliance with approved contract documents.
Assist with the review and validation of contractor progress-payment requests based on approved schedules of values and verified work in place.
Monitor contractor compliance with local jurisdictional requirements, Los Angeles building codes, ADA requirements, and airport-specific standards.
Maintain accurate and organized electronic inspection records using applicable project management and document-control systems.
Communicate inspection findings, construction issues, scheduling concerns, and potential impacts to project leadership.
Coordinate inspection activities with contractors, consultants, engineers, airport representatives, and other project stakeholders.
Perform work in active airport and terminal environments while complying with all applicable operational, security, and safety procedures.
Inspection Areas
The Construction Inspector may perform inspections involving:
Clearing, grubbing, and demolition of existing building structures.
Excavation, trenching, shoring, and related earthwork.
Grade and elevation verification.
Structural backfill and compaction for underground utilities.
Structural and nonstructural concrete construction.
Formwork, reinforcing steel, footings, foundations, and micropiles.
Sewer, storm-drain, and underground utility installations.
Structural-steel and concrete building components.
Metal-stud framing and drywall installation.
Architectural finishes and interior components.
Doors, frames, hardware, and associated components.
T-bar ceilings, hard-lid ceilings, and fire-rated assemblies.
Construction activities affecting airport terminal operations and public facilities.
Required Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Required Qualifications
Minimum of five years of experience performing construction inspection.
Experience inspecting building construction, public facilities, transportation projects, or similarly complex construction programs.
Training in the proper use of fall-protection equipment, including harnesses and lanyards.
Confined-space awareness certification.
Current Cal/OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety and Health certification.
NFPA 70E certification for candidates performing electrical inspections.
Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, shop drawings, RFIs, submittals, change orders, and related contract documents.
Strong computer proficiency and the ability to efficiently review electronic construction documents with minimal supervision.
Experience using project management, inspection, and document-control software.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
Experience with systems such as PMWeb, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Bluebeam.
Ability to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive inspection reports.
Ability to track construction progress, field changes, time-and-material work, and installed quantities.
Strong knowledge of construction materials, methods, sequencing, and quality requirements.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to identify deficiencies and ensure that construction work meets applicable standards.
Preferred Qualifications
International Code Council certifications.
City of Los Angeles Deputy Inspector licenses.
Experience inspecting large-scale airport terminals, public buildings, or aviation facilities.
Experience inspecting steel structures, concrete structures, architectural finishes, building systems, and terminal-related construction.
Knowledge of Los Angeles City building codes.
Knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
Experience inspecting building demolition and construction projects from initial site preparation through final completion.
Experience working in active and operational airport environments.
Strong understanding of diverse regulatory, contractual, and technical construction requirements.
Excellent communication, coordination, and field-management skills.
Compensation
$155,000–$165,000 annually
Bonus Opportunity
