Job Description
We're looking for an experienced and decisive Workshop Team Leader to lead our evening shift operations in Christchurch, New Zealand. In this role, you will oversee daily workshop activities, manage team performance, and ensure operational excellence during evening hours. You will collaborate closely with our other team leader, workshop supervisor and maintenance scheduler to maintain seamless operations across shifts and drive continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership capabilities, motivate team members to achieve production goals, and maintain a safe, productive work environment.
Supervise and lead workshop team members during evening shift operations (Monday to Thursday: 14:00–12:30, Friday: 14:00–19:00), providing clear direction and support
Monitor production schedules, workflow efficiency, and quality standards to ensure targets are met
Review and manage workload allocation using computer-based asset management systems to optimise resource utilisation and track equipment deployment across the workshop
Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback to team members to drive continuous improvement
Implement and enforce health and safety protocols, ensuring compliance with all workplace regulations
Analyse operational challenges and make decisive decisions to resolve issues promptly and effectively
Allocate resources and manage shift schedules to optimize team productivity and coverage, utilising asset management system data to inform scheduling decisions
Communicate effectively with management, other team leaders, other departments, and team members to coordinate activities and ensure operational continuity across shifts
Collaborate with other team leader to share best practices, align on production priorities, and address cross-shift operational challenges
Train and mentor team members on equipment operation, procedures, best practices, and asset management system protocols
Maintain detailed records of production metrics, incidents, team performance, and asset management data within computer-based systems
Foster a motivational work environment that encourages collaboration and professional development
Qualifications
Proven experience in a team leadership or supervisory role within a heavy automotive workshop, fleet maintenance facility, or road transport engineering environment
Strong knowledge of heavy vehicle operations, systems, and maintenance processes specific to road transport applications
Demonstrated ability to manage shift operations and coordinate multiple priorities effectively in a technical workshop setting
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate diverse technical teams
Proficiency in performance management and employee development within a technical workforce
Solid understanding of health and safety regulations and workplace compliance requirements
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a decisive approach to decision-making
Experience with scheduling, resource allocation, and workforce planning in workshop environments
Ability to work evening shift hours consistently and reliably
Formal qualification or certification in heavy vehicle maintenance, automotive engineering, or equivalent technical discipline
Background in continuous improvement methodologies or lean manufacturing practices within automotive or transport sectors
