Job Summary
The Chief Academic Officer & DIO (Designated Institutional Official) administers and maintains an educational environment conducive to educating residents/fellows in each of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) competency areas and in conformance with program policies and procedures. The Chief Academic Officer is accountable to ACGME’s Residency Review Committee and the leadership of MVHS for the timely and accurate completion of all tasks and their quality. The Chief Academic Officer is also responsible for overseeing Medical Student Education within MVHS.
Core Job Responsibilities
Creates and monitors strategies for the Graduate Medical Education Department and ensure alignment with MVHS organizational objectives and with ACGME requirements.
Is responsible for overseeing the Graduate Medical Education Department and Employees.
Oversees the development and execution of Medical Education programs and related clinical operations.
Maintains current knowledge of and compliance with ACGME Institutional, Common, and specialty-subspecialty-specific program requirements.
Leads the development of strategic partnerships (e.g., medical schools, specialty clinics, research institutions, local governments, and communities) necessary to facilitate medical education and ensure contractual obligations and institutional requirements are fully satisfied.
Ensures medical education serves as a mechanism to augment clinical capability in key departments.
Envisions and implements methods to leverage medical education resources or relationships to enhance the GME program or develop new sources of revenue.
Promotes the formulation of methods and strategies to recruit a diverse clinical workforce, faculty, and resident complement.
Ensures the completion, delivery and execution of contract agreements that obligate providers and institutions to facilitate a successful medical education program.
Develops and approves a strategic and operational department budget and ensure fiscal compliance with organizational policies and procedures as well as department goals.
Accountable for all human resource activities within the department.
Develops metrics to evaluate program performance. Analyzes trends and identify opportunities for improvement.
Identifies and evaluates methods to continuously improve the Graduate and Medical Student Medical Education programs.
Accountable for Program and Medical Education staff compliance with accrediting agencies.
Responsible for overseeing and executing mock site reviews and audits as well as reviewing results with key stakeholders.
Approves and oversees the implementation of written organizational and departmental policies and procedures as pertaining to residents and medical student learners. Participates in professional development applicable to responsibilities as an educational and administrative leader.
Communicates the needs of the program (e.g., financial, human, or other resources, etc.) to the leadership and appropriate staff within MVHS.
May perform duties as a physician within MVHS. Refer to applicable job description.
Performs other duties as required, including those details in the job description supplement, attached.
Responsible for the supervision of all Residency Program Directors to insure compliance with both MVHS and ACGME requirements.
Responsible for overseeing MVHS Regional Medical Student Deans to insure compliance with both MVHS and Medical School requirements.
Education/Experience Requirements
REQUIRED:
Medical Doctorate (MD) or Doctorate of Osteopathy (DO) degree required.
Five years of progressive experience as an active faculty member of a residency program.
Three years of graduate medical education administrative experience.
Knowledgeable of continuously evolving standards, requirements, and trends of medical education and research.
Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, evaluation methodology, teaching, and mentoring residents.
Demonstrated excellence in an overall mix of skills including clinical care, clinical teaching, and scholarly activity that advance clinical medicine and institutional service.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
REQUIRED:
Current certification in a specialty by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Unrestricted medical licensure in the state of New York.
