About the Role
The School Nurse, a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Nurse (RN) with Ohio Department of Education (ODEW) Certification, will provide health services to students within the district. This role involves treating students with chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, allergies, ect.;creating and managing individual health plans; maintaining health records for all students; medical emergency response and ensuring compliance with ODEW regulations.
The School Nurse will be responsible for medication administration and maintaining a safe and healthy school environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Health Services and Treatment
● Diabetic Care: Monitor, treat, and manage the health needs of diabetic students, including blood glucose testing,
insulin administration, training staff and education on diabetes management.
● Emergency Care: Provide first aid and emergency care as needed; respond to health-related emergencies
promptly.
● Chronic Condition Management: Address other chronic health conditions and collaborate with students,
parents, and healthcare providers to develop and implement care plans.
2. Health Plans Management
● Create Health Plans: Develop individualized health plans for students with chronic conditions or special health
needs.
● Manage Plans: Regularly review and update health plans to ensure they meet students' evolving needs and
comply with legal and district requirements.
● Communicate Plans: Share health plans with relevant staff and ensure proper implementation.
3. Medication Administration
● Dispense Medication: Administer prescribed medications to students according to established protocols,
physician orders and schedules.
● Maintain Records: Keep accurate records of medication administration, including dosages and times, and
manage medication inventory.
4. Compliance and Reporting
● ODEW Compliance: Ensure all health services and practices comply with ODEW regulations and guidelines not
limited to immunization review and reporting, hearing and vision screening and reporting.
● Reporting Deadlines: Meet all reporting deadlines for health-related documentation and compliance as required
by ODEW and district policies
Documentation: Maintain up-to-date and accurate health records for students, including immunizations, health
histories, and incident reports.
● Evaluation Team Reports: Conducts vision and hearing screenings for special education evaluations as
assigned by the school psychologist.
5. Health Education and Promotion
● Student Education: Provide health education to students on topics such as hygiene, nutrition, and wellness.
● Staff Training: Train school staff on health-related issues and emergency procedures.
6. Collaboration and Communication
● Parent Interaction: Communicate with parents regarding their child’s health needs, treatment plans, and any
health-related concerns.
● Healthcare Providers: Work with external healthcare providers and agencies to coordinate care and support for
students.
7. General Responsibilities
● Health Room Management: Oversee the daily operation of the health office, including maintaining a clean and
organized environment.
● Emergency Preparedness: Participate in school safety and emergency preparedness planning and drills.
Qualifications
● Licensure: Registered Nurse (RN) license required; ODEW certification optional.
● Experience: Previous experience in a school setting or with pediatric patients is desirable.
● Skills:

○ Ability to work effectively with students, parents, and staff.
○ Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
○ Proficiency in documentation and compliance with health regulations.
