At GBH, we believe in the advantages of coming together to build community, mentor and learn from colleagues, and connect more deeply with our mission. As a result, the majority of our staff are hybrid and work both from home and onsite. Our current hybrid approach requires staff to work onsite a minimum of two days each week, every Tuesday and Wednesday, Hybrid staff are also welcome to come in additional days each week or may be asked to come in on other days by their manager.
Department Overview
GBH News is a multi-platform local newsroom headquartered in Boston. Our goal — through in-depth, high-quality journalism — is to inform, educate and enlighten our audience. We cover the immediate news of the day as well issues and developments that shape our community and culture. GBH News broadcasts and streams local, national, and international news, produces local talk shows, and publishes a wide variety of locally sourced news online. Job Overview
GBH News is seeking an energetic, curious, and enterprising reporter to join our newsroom on a Wednesday–Sunday schedule, covering general assignment news with a partial focus on higher education.
This is a high-impact role for a journalist who is a true news hound — someone who doesn’t wait for assignments but consistently pitches, pursues, and delivers original reporting that serves our audiences across platforms.
The ideal candidate is proactive, deeply engaged with the news, and skilled at spotting stories before they break. You are comfortable owning your ideas, moving quickly in a fast-paced environment, and collaborating with editors and colleagues to elevate your work.
You’ll cover breaking news, accountability reporting, and enterprise stories across Greater Boston and beyond. This role requires strong storytelling, source-building, and the ability to file quickly and accurately for digital and radio.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Pitch, research, and report general assignment news stories, including enterprise and breaking news, across multiple beats, with a partial focus on higher education.
Cover breaking news, spot developments, and move quickly to report and file across platforms.
Report, write, and produce stories for digital and radio, including newscasts, web posts and vertical video.
Conduct interviews, gather sound, and deliver clear, accurate, and compelling journalism under deadline pressure.
Collaborate with editors, producers, and other newsroom teams to shape coverage and elevate stories across broadcast and digital/social platforms.
Build and maintain sources within the communities you cover.
SKILLSET
Well versed across multiple beats, with a broad understanding of local politics, business, breaking news, and other key coverage areas. Experience covering education, particularly higher education, would be a significant plus
Demonstrated ability to generate strong story ideas and report independently
Experience filing on deadline for digital and/or audio platforms
Solid news judgment and ability to report both breaking and enterprise stories
Strong writing, reporting, and interviewing skills
Ability to work weekends and holidays as news demands
Familiarity with Boston and New England
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
3-5 years of reporting experience in a newsroom environment
