Develop neuromorphic vision systems for autonomous maritime sensing in complex, real-world environments.

The Opportunity
You will contribute to the Aqua Colliculus Autonomous Neuromorphic Sonobuoy Network research program, advancing maritime perception technologies for autonomous sensing systems. Your work will focus on designing and developing neuromorphic and low‑power vision approaches integrated with multi‑modal sensing to improve environmental awareness in complex maritime conditions.

You will design and deliver event-based and frame-based perception algorithms while building reproducible research pipelines and managing high-quality datasets. This includes structured experimentation, baseline modelling, and clear performance reporting aligned with research standards. You will also produce peer-reviewed publications and communicate findings to academic and industry audiences.

Working within the International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems at the MARCS Institute, you will collaborate across disciplines including engineering, computer science, signal processing, and neuroscience. You will support the integration of sensing technologies into operational systems and contribute to field trials, ensuring research outcomes translate into practical applications.

• Deliver robust maritime perception algorithms aligned to project objectives.
• Produce high-quality research outputs including publications and datasets.
• Build reproducible pipelines with clear evaluation and reporting standards.
• Integrate sensing technologies into operational and field environments.

About You

• PhD in Computer Vision, Robotics, Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
• Australian citizen (required due to the nature of the research and project requirements).
• Experience with event cameras and/or vision systems in challenging environments.
• Strong programming skills in Python and/or C/C++, with Linux and Git experience.
• Experience with deep learning frameworks and model evaluation techniques.
• Demonstrated research track record with peer-reviewed publications.

The International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems (ICNS) is a Centre within the MARCS  Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development.

The Centre is explicitly interdisciplinary, by combining electrical engineering, computer science, signal processing, and neuroscience. ICNS’s  focus is on developing Neuromorphic Engineering solutions to existing problems.
