Full job description
We're building something great at IMG and we need a second Weld Shop Leading Hand to help us take it to the next level. If you're the kind of tradesperson who can't walk past a substandard weld without saying something, who runs a tight ship without losing the respect of your crew, and who takes genuine pride in getting it right the first time - read on.
This isn't just a floor role. You'll be a key driver of quality, productivity and team culture in our Weld Shop.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Weld Shop Manager, you'll work alongside our existing Leading Hand to keep our fabrication and welding operation firing on all cylinders. You'll be the eyes and ears on the floor — running projects, keeping the team on track, holding the quality line, and making sure every job leaves the shop the way it should.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
Day to day, you'll be hands-on and in the mix — leading by example and making sure the shop runs to the standards IMG is known for.
Keep the team on track — monitor job progress, flag issues early, and make sure every work front is resourced and moving
Own the quality — conduct in-process and final inspections, sign off on workmanship, and never let a job leave the floor that isn't right
Run projects — understand work plans, manage daily priorities, and keep the Weld Shop Manager in the loop
Lead the people — mentor junior welders, lift team capability, and set the standard for how things are done
Champion H&S — drive our 'Safety First' culture on the floor, lead Take 2s and toolbox meetings, and ensure zero shortcuts
Issue and manage work packs, allocate labour, and ensure signed drawings and check sheets are in place for every job
Keep the shop tight — high standards for housekeeping, tool condition, and scrap management
Back your hands — MIG, TIG, stick welding, structural and pipe work when required
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
You're a qualified, experienced trade professional with the mana to lead and the drive to deliver.
Trade qualified welder/fabricator with 5+ years' experience in industrial or heavy engineering environments
Proven experience in a Leading Hand, supervisory, or senior trade role
Proficiency in MIG, TIG, and Stick welding — structural and pipe welding experience a strong advantage
Sharp eye for quality — you read drawings confidently and know when something isn't right
Relevant welding qualifications (or the ability to qualify)
Strong communicator who can give clear direction, deliver honest feedback, and maintain calm under pressure
Physically fit, reliable, and happy to work the hours the job demands
Familiarity with ITPs, inspection documentation, and quality management processes
