They are responsible for conducting scientific exchanges, capturing external insights, and supporting research initiatives while maintaining compliance and scientific independence.
Requirements
Candidates must hold an advanced degree such as MD, PharmD, or PhD and possess at least five years of experience in Medical Affairs, vaccines, or infectious diseases. Strong expertise in clinical evidence, stakeholder network management, and the ability to travel extensively are essential for this role.
Full job description
We are a specialty vaccine company that develops, manufactures, and commercializes prophylactic vaccines for infectious diseases addressing unmet medical needs.
We have leveraged our expertise and capabilities both to commercialize three vaccines, including the world’s first and only chikungunya vaccine, and to rapidly advance a broad range of vaccine candidates into and through the clinic, including candidates against Lyme disease and Zika.
Valneva USA is focused on the marketing and distribution of vaccines for Japanese encephalitis and chikungunya.
The Senior Medical Science Liaison (MSL), Eastern Territory, is a senior field medical role responsible for scientific engagement with external stakeholders across the Eastern United States. The role serves as a credible, accessible scientific partner to healthcare professionals, key external experts, researchers, public-health leaders, and healthcare-system decision-makers.
Lead the development and execution of a territory-specific medical strategy for the Eastern U.S., prioritizing scientific engagement, evidence needs, and stakeholder impact.
Establish long-term peer-to-peer partnerships with leading infectious-disease physicians, travel-medicine specialists, vaccinologists, epidemiologists, academic centers, public-health professionals, and other relevant stakeholders.
Conduct proactive and responsive scientific exchange on disease epidemiology, preventive-vaccine science, clinical development, efficacy, safety, and real-world evidence.
Provide balanced and accurate scientific responses to unsolicited requests for medical information, within approved policies and applicable regulations.
Systematically capture, synthesize, and communicate external insights that may inform medical strategy, evidence generation, educational initiatives, clinical development, and access planning.
Identify research opportunities, potential investigators, and qualified study sites; collaborate with internal partners to support research feasibility and execution.
Support compliant medical education, advisory boards, scientific congress engagement, and other field-medical initiatives.
Serve as an internal scientific resource on the Eastern regional landscape, including emerging evidence, clinical-practice variation, stakeholder priorities, and public-health dynamics.
Collaborate constructively with cross-functional colleagues while maintaining the scientific independence, compliance standards, and non-promotional character of Medical Affairs.
Support internal scientific training and provide expert input into medical-review, planning, and launch-readiness activities as appropriate.
Maintain current knowledge of peer-reviewed literature, clinical guidelines, vaccine-policy developments, and the infectious-disease landscape.
Recognize, document, and promptly report adverse events, product complaints, and other reportable safety information.
Esseential Qualifications/ Experience
Advanced degree in a relevant clinical or scientific discipline, such as MD, DO, PharmD, PhD, DNP, NP, PA, MPH with substantial scientific/clinical experience, or equivalent.
Five or more years of relevant experience in Medical Affairs, vaccines, infectious disease, clinical development, epidemiology, public health, or the biopharmaceutical industry.
Three or more years of field medical/MSL experience preferred, with demonstrated success managing complex scientific stakeholder networks.
Experience discussing clinical evidence with sophisticated external experts and explaining study design, endpoints, limitations, safety data, and real-world relevance.
Expertise in vaccines, infectious diseases, epidemiology, travel medicine, immunization policy, or a related therapeutic area.
Strong ability to work autonomously, prioritize strategically, manage a geographically broad territory, and operate effectively in a matrix organization.
Exceptional scientific communication, presentation, insight-generation, and relationship-management capabilities.
Willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout the Eastern U.S.; residence near a major airport is strongly preferred.

Valneva is a specialty vaccine company that develops, manufactures, and commercializes prophylactic vaccines for infectious diseases addressing unmet medical needs.
We take a highly specialized and targeted approach, applying our deep expertise across multiple vaccine modalities, focused on providing either first-, best- or only-in-class vaccine solutions.
We have a strong track record, having advanced multiple vaccines from early R&D to approvals, and currently market three proprietary travel vaccines, including the world’s first and only chikungunya vaccine, as well as certain third-party vaccines.
Revenues from our growing commercial business help fuel the continued advancement of our vaccine pipeline.
