The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1986. CHIRLA is a California leader with national impact made of diverse immigrant families and individuals who act as agents of social change to achieve a world with freedom of mobility, full human rights, and true participatory democracy. CHIRLA organizes and serves individuals, institutions, and coalitions to build power, transform public opinions, and change policies to achieve full human, civil and labor rights. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
CHIRLA’s Climate Justice Department is seeking a Statewide Climate Justice Advocate to work on community building, coalition building, and advocacy campaigns to advance climate justice for immigrant communities. The Advocate, in partnership with the Organizing Department, will focus on growing and maintaining CHIRLA’s base of climate impacted community members. The Advocate will be responsible for the recruitment and retention of community members. The Advocate will be responsible for coordinating community gatherings, crafting community education materials, and building relationships with external partners. The Advocate will coordinate advocacy actions, volunteer trips and leadership development to empower BIPOC immigrant communities to lead in the climate justice space.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Coordination, Organizing and Education
Coordinate with the Director for Climate Justice and Director of Organizing to develop and implement an outreach and recruitment plan for CHIRLA’s climate impacted members.
Implement leadership development program for members throughout the state.
Serve as a resource and mentor to organizers and members.
Develop and disseminate immigrant rights materials as they pertain to climate justice.
Convene and facilitate member meetings, events, workshops, or coalition gatherings.
Contribute to broader advocacy campaigns to support climate justice.
Conduct presentations to community at large concerning current CHIRLA campaigns.
Travel throughout the state to carry out these or additional duties.
CampaignCoordination
Lead Campaign Development and implementation for climate justice in California.
Conduct necessary research for climate justice and/or CHIRLA campaigns.
In conjunction with Communications teams, develop and implement media strategies that center directly impacted members around the campaign and manage media inquiries around immigrant and climate issues.
Assist in development and implementation of broader CHIRLA campaigns, including member mobilization.
Works closely with Policy and Advocacy staff, Political Director, and other relevant departments to determine policy priorities for climate justice and CHIRLA at large.
Manage and coordinate the coalition-building on the regional level.
Participate in and report at general staff and department meetings.
Support fundraising for committee as well as broader CHIRLA activities and events.
Other duties and responsibilities as necessary.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS: Required:
At least two years of community college or equivalent related experience.
Demonstrated commitment to mission and goals of CHIRLA.
Proven experience in a non-profit organization or research firm
Two years community involvement or direct organizing experience
Strong oral and written advocacy skills. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work and problem-solve under pressure.
Excellent research and policy development skills
Experience in campaign development and implementation.
Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
Spanish fluency or high proficiency is required. Mixteco or other indigenous language speakers welcome.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships throughout the organization and community.
Flexibility is required based on the needs of the organization. The position will involve some evening and weekend work.
Computer literacy: word processing, internet navigation, and other work-related applications.
Preferred:
Must be extremely organized. Must be able to work efficiently and manage multiple projects at once, which may be at different stages of design and execution.

JOB TITLE: Statewide Climate Justice Organizer
Salary & Benefits: $72,500 - 74,000 CHIRLA offers a competitive salary based on qualifications and an excellent benefit package, which includes generous time off benefits, 401K Plan, health, dental and vision plans.
FLSA Classification: Exempt, full-time regular
Classification: CHIRLA recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with AFSCME Local 4501. This position is included in CHIRLA’s bargaining unit and covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.
