Full job description
Company Description
If you thrive in fast-moving, data-driven environments and enjoy solving complex commercial problems, this could be your next step. This role offers the opportunity to shape how flexible assets are valued and monetised across Southern Europe.
We are looking for professionals with backgrounds in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or Business to join Statkraft’s Automated Flexibility Trading team.
Statkraft’s Automated Flexibility Trading team operates at the intersection of asset flexibility, market volatility and algorithmic decision‑making. Our systems make millions of real‑time decisions every day across intraday, balancing and ancillary services markets, directly shaping PnL. As we scale this capability across Spain, Italy and France, we are looking for a (Senior) Commercial Analyst to take commercial ownership of flexibility optimisation in the region.
Why Statkraft?
Statkraft has been making clean energy possible for over a century. That’s what we offer. 125 years of unrivalled expertise in supplying the world with what it needs most. Because in the fight against climate change, we don’t see renewable energy as part of the solution. We believe it must be the solution. With us, you’ll shape a career that is truly forward-facing with many amazing opportunities and offerings to match.
But there’s more work to be done. That’s why we need you to join us.
Energy markets are becoming more complex, more volatile and more data‑driven. Success increasingly depends on real‑time optimisation and the smart use of flexibility from both, Renewable Assets and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to maximise value creation.
Statkraft is strengthening its end‑to‑end market capabilities across Europe, combining long‑term origination with sophisticated short‑term optimisation and trading. Southern Europe – and Italy in particular – is playing an increasingly important role in this journey, expanding into short-term trading and BESS optimisation, supported by strong collaboration across Statkraft’s European market organisation.
You will help build the flexibility backbone of Southern Europe, being of a high‑performing, international environment where technology, analytics and commercial judgement come together to unlock value from renewable and flexible portfolios.
For professionals who want responsibility, growth and the chance to make a real commercial impact in the energy transition, Statkraft in Milan is a compelling next step.
Job Description
Working in Automated Flexibility Trading team:
The team is part of the Cross-functional Optimization department within Energy Management department. Energy Management is responsible for energy management of all Statkraft’s own and 3rd party assets and consumers in Europe, delivering production planning and access to physical energy markets. We also deliver weather, hydrology, climate and market analysis across Statkraft.
The Automated Flexibility Trading Team is responsible for developing and implementing algorithmic trading and virtual power plant solutions that automatically trade and steer asset flexibility in real-time and run proprietary trading activities in order to commercially optimize Statkraft’s portfolio in the relevant energy markets. The exciting and innovative projects the team works on together with the trading desks are revolutionizing Statkraft's energy management operations and helping to keep Statkraft as a leading market participant in the complex energy markets of the future.
The energy sector is currently facing a strong transition towards digitalization and automation driven by decentralisation of generation and increased market dynamics. To handle the resulting increased complexity efficiently, Statkraft makes use of algorithmic trading and virtual power plant solutions that automatically balance renewable generation, steer asset flexibility in real-time and run trading activities. These algorithms make millions of decisions per day to send orders to the power exchange and steer the physical assets.
Key responsibilities:
The (Senior) Commercial Analyst in the Automated Flexibility Trading Team is a critical and multi-faceted role for the Southern European business.
The role combines elements of commercial ownership, analytical leadership, and strategic thinking. You will be expected not only to build and extend models, but to actively shape how flexibility is deployed and monetized– always with a clear view on risk, optionality and PnL impact.
Develop and improve automated trading and optimisation algorithms for flexible assets
Extend, adapt and localise optimisation and trading frameworks for Southern European wholesale power and ancillary services markets
Communicate complex analytical outputs to stakeholders across the organisation
Continuously challenge model assumptions, data quality and market representations based on observed fundamentals and market behaviour
Act as a sparring partner to traders, originators and portfolio managers
Contribute to the improvement of our algorithmic trading and monitoring systems
Qualifications
We are looking for professionals with backgrounds in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or Business with the essential skills to future-proof our business and renewable energy solutions. That includes knowledge in:
Excellent university degree, e.g. in mathematics, physics, computer science or business with strong quantitative focus
Proven experience developing analytical, optimisation or trading models in a commercial environment
High diligence and quality in coding and model development preferably experience in Python
Experience in Italy wholesale and ancillary services power market, ideally in optimizing and trading

Proactive and independent way of working, high reliability, strong communication skills
Fluent in English, any other European languages are an advantage
