Responsibilities
Lead the development and optimization of fabrication processes for next-generation quantum chips through structured experimentation. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to transition R&D breakthroughs into scalable manufacturing technologies.
Requirements
Requires at least 5 years of experience in micro- or nanofabrication, with a Master's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. A PhD is strongly advantageous, along with a proven track record in semiconductor or quantum technology development.
Full job description
At IQM, we build world-leading quantum computers for the well-being of humankind. We design systems to tackle computational challenges beyond the practical limits of classical machines. Our work sits at the edge of science and engineering. It's complex, demanding, and deeply collaborative. We turn deep research into reliable, full-stack systems that drive discoveries in fields like medicine, energy, and technology, reshaping how the world computes.
Join the team that gives quantum a heartbeat.
The work
The performance of a quantum computer starts in the cleanroom. As a Quantum Engineer, you'll lead the development of fabrication processes for IQM's next generation of quantum chips. Working across R&D, design, and production teams, you'll solve complex engineering challenges and transform experimental breakthroughs into scalable manufacturing technologies.
What you’ll actually do
Lead the development and optimization of quantum chip fabrication processes through structured experimentation and data-driven iteration.
Design, execute, and analyze hypothesis-driven experiments to evaluate new materials, fabrication methods, and process flows.
Assess technical feasibility, risks, and integration strategies for future QPU architectures.
Work closely with Design, Calibration, Equipment Engineering, Process Integration, Chip Production, and Cleanroom teams to bring new fabrication technologies into production.
Mentor Process Engineers and Technicians by supporting experimental design, troubleshooting, and technical growth while promoting a safe and transparent engineering culture.
Build lasting technical knowledge through thorough documentation, patent contributions, technical reports, and publications, while helping transition successful R&D developments into scalable manufacturing.
What we’re looking for
At least 5 years of experience in micro- or nanofabrication, including a minimum of 2 years focused on R&D or technology development within quantum or semiconductor technologies.
Deep expertise across quantum chip or advanced semiconductor fabrication processes, with experience developing and validating new manufacturing techniques.
Master's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nanotechnology, Materials Science, or a related field. A PhD is a strong advantage, but equivalent industry experience is equally valued.
Strong experimental mindset with experience designing structured investigations, interpreting complex data, and making evidence-based technical decisions.
Comfortable working across multidisciplinary teams while independently driving long-term technical initiatives and navigating uncertainty.
Excellent technical communication skills and the ability to mentor colleagues and share knowledge across engineering teams.
We encourage applications from candidates of all experience levels. (Advanced / Senior / Staff level)
Nice to have
Experience contributing to patents, scientific publications, or technology roadmaps.
Familiarity with scaling research processes into robust, manufacturable production technologies.
High-performance playground: We aim high, and we know sustainable performance only works when life outside work does too—hybrid setups, flexible hours.
Never the smartest: Expect to learn constantly. You won't always be the smartest person in the room, and that's the point.
Approachable leadership: Flat hierarchy, direct access. Feel free to approach any leaders. They're friendlier than they look!
The sweet spot: Big enough to matter. Small enough to move fast. Growing between a startup and a corporation. We’re in the phase where top performers get noticed.
Bigger than IQM: Our people build know-how for the entire quantum ecosystem. We publish papers, run hackathons, and help shape a market that's still being defined.
The future of computing won’t build itself. You might be one of the few who do.
