GENERAL SUMMARY
The Accessibility and Engagement Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, training, and managing volunteers and interns, ensuring they are well-equipped, supported, and meaningfully engaged in their roles. This position also serves as the Museum's ADA Coordinator, overseeing accessibility initiatives, compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and inclusive practices across all museum programs and facilities.
This role supports a welcoming, engaging, and accessible environment for all staff, visitors, and participants by aligning volunteer, internship, and accessibility efforts with the Mint Museum's mission and strategic goals. The ideal candidate demonstrates exceptional organization, communication, and interpersonal skills and is deeply committed to fostering belonging and accessibility in cultural spaces.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteer and Intern Recruitment and Training
Recruit, onboard, train, and coordinate volunteers and interns to support museum operations and programs. Develop and deliver orientation materials that emphasize inclusion, accessibility, and cultural competence. Serve as a liaison between museum departments and volunteer/intern participants to ensure clear expectations and support.
Volunteer and Intern Coordination
Act as the primary point of contact for all volunteers and interns, providing guidance, communication, and problem-solving support. Maintain updated contact lists, schedules, and records for accurate tracking and reporting. Match participants with roles that align with their skills, interests, and accessibility needs.
Internship Program Management
Oversee the full lifecycle of the internship program, including recruitment, onboarding, orientation, project coordination, and evaluations. Cultivate and maintain partnerships with colleges, universities, and community organizations to strengthen the museum's talent pipeline. Support interns and supervisors in achieving meaningful, educational experiences that reflect museum standards and values.
Staff Engagement
Support internal staff engagement initiatives to foster a culture of collaboration, appreciation, and inclusion.
Program Administration
Work with HR to ensure compliance with museum standards, including background checks, interviews, and documentation. Maintain accurate program data, hours tracking, and performance reporting.
Event Support
Coordinate and supervise volunteer and intern participation during museum events, including occasional evenings and weekends. Ensure accessibility considerations are incorporated into event planning and execution.
Recognition and Retention
Plan and execute recognition initiatives to celebrate volunteer and intern contributions and encourage long-term engagement.
ACCESSIBILITY AND ADA COORDINATION
Serve as the museum's ADA Coordinator, ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and related accessibility standards. Partner with Facilities, Guest Services, Learning and Engagement, and Community Outreach to identify and remove barriers to participation and access. Maintain knowledge of ADA regulations and accessibility best practices for cultural institutions. Respond to accessibility inquiries, requests, and accommodation needs from visitors, staff, and program participants. Conduct or coordinate periodic accessibility audits and track corrective actions. Develop and deliver staff training on accessibility, ADA compliance, and inclusive visitor experience. Liaise with community organizations, advocates, and consultants to advance the museum's accessibility goals and public accountability. Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Nonprofit Management, Museum Studies, Education, or related field required; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 2 to 4 years of experience coordinating volunteers, interns, or related engagement programs, preferably in a museum, nonprofit, or educational setting. Knowledge of ADA regulations, accessibility standards, and inclusive practices strongly preferred. Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with strong attention to detail. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a customer-service orientation. Demonstrated ability to foster inclusion, teamwork, and cross-departmental collaboration.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging (DEIAB) principles. Strong organizational and time management skills. Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Google Workspace, and volunteer management platforms. Ability to communicate with empathy, cultural awareness, and professionalism. Skilled in facilitation, conflict resolution, and training delivery.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Standard office environment with occasional evening and weekend work for events. Occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs.) and movement across multiple museum sites (Mint Museum Uptown and Mint Museum Randolph). Hybrid work flexibility may be available based on operational needs.
