 Position Summary

The Director of Clinical Physical Therapy is a new role with the exciting opportunity to build, lead and oversee the delivery of physical therapy rehabilitation services within a worker’s compensation ancillary services setting. This senior leadership role will be responsible for directing a team of licensed physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, and support staff; ensuring clinical quality and regulatory compliance; managing operational workflows; and serving as the primary liaison between clinical, payer, and employer stakeholders. The Director drives patient outcomes across injury rehabilitation, functional restoration, and return-to-work programming, ensuring care is delivered at the highest level of clinical practice.

Key Responsibilities

Program Development & Clinical Leadership

Sets clinical vision and practice standards for the physical therapy program, aligning care protocols with evidence-based guidelines for musculoskeletal injury, occupational rehabilitation, and functional capacity evaluation in workers compensation cases. This includes overseeing the development and implementation of treatment planning protocols, ensuring all clinicians are practicing at the full scope of their licensure. The Director will ensure physical therapists are maximally focused on high-value clinical work.

Team Creation, Support & Management

Will hire and supervise rehabilitation therapy staff, coordinates caseloads, monitors performance against established clinical standards, and provides both formal and informal feedback. The Director delegates appropriately based on staff skills and potential, takes ownership of coordinating others' work, and empowers the team to achieve high performance.  In addition will identify learning and development needs within the clinical team and facilitate ongoing professional development, including CEU compliance.

Workers Compensation Case Management & Coordination

Will oversee clinical management of workers compensation cases from initial evaluation through return-to-work, coordinating with case managers, employers, insurance adjusters, and physicians. Ensures clinical documentation meets workers’ compensation regulatory and payer requirements and that treatment is defensible and outcomes focused.

Operations, Scheduling & Resource Management

Monitors operational metrics, manages patient throughput, and ensures efficient deployment of resources across the workers compensation caseload.

Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance

Ensures the program  will be in full compliance with state physical therapy practice acts, workers compensation regulations, payer contract requirements, OSHA standards, and applicable accreditation bodies. This requires developing internal policies and procedures, conducting clinical audits, and implementing corrective actions where standards are not met.

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

Will serve as the primary clinical contact for employer partners, workers compensation adjusters, third-party administrators, and referring physicians. This requires strong communication skills, the ability to present clinical outcome data persuasively, and the capacity to negotiate return-to-work timelines and modified duty arrangements on behalf of injured workers.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Physical Therapy (clinical expertise) and interdisciplinary rehabilitation coordination (complementary modality familiarity)
  • Rehabilitation program creation, design and delivery
  • Treatment planning for musculoskeletal and occupational injuries
  • Functional capacity evaluation and work conditioning protocols
  • Knowledge of workers compensation laws, payer requirements, and return-to-work regulations
  • Operations management in a clinical setting

Leadership / Behavioral Skills Accountability for decisions and outcomes

  • Motivating and empowering clinical teams to perform at their highest level
  • Collaboration, team cohesion, and cross-functional coordination
  • Empathy, active listening, and understanding others' perspectives
  • Ethical conduct and upholding professional standards
  • Encouragement of diversity and inclusion within the clinical team

Minimum Qualifications

  • Active and unrestricted state Physical Therapy license in the state of practice
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of clinical physical therapy experience, with at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or management role
  • Experience in program development and creation
  • Demonstrated experience managing workers compensation cases and coordinating with employers, adjusters, and case managers
