Full job description
At IAG, we’re ready for you. We're the largest general insurance group in Australia and New Zealand. Our family of brands turns the IAG purpose of making your world a safer place into action by helping everyday Aussies and New Zealanders, supporting their ambitions and making insurance accessible.
Step into the frontier of AI engineering, where problems are undefined and possibilities are wide open. As an Agentic Discovery Engineer, you’ll turn ambiguity into clear, validated direction by building and experimenting with agentic systems from the ground up. This is not a role for passive analysis—you’ll learn by doing, rapidly prototyping workflows, testing LLM behaviours, and iterating in real environments to uncover what actually works.
Working closely with Product, Platform, and Outcome Leads, you’ll shape solution direction at the earliest stage by producing tangible evidence: prototypes, evaluations, prompts, and insights that bring clarity to complexity. Your work will directly enable engineering teams to scale solutions with confidence, grounded in real-world validation rather than assumptions.
This role is designed for engineers who are naturally curious, hands-on, and excited by modern AI tooling. If you thrive in uncertainty, enjoy experimenting your way to answers, and want to play a defining role in how agentic systems are built, this is your opportunity to have real impact at the cutting edge.
What You’ll Do
Build and run agentic prototypes to explore problems, feasibility, and solution paths.
Design LLM-powered workflows including tools, retrieval, and orchestration.
Experiment with models, prompts, and architectures to balance quality, cost, and performance.
Capture reusable context, assumptions, and agent behaviours for future scaling.
Create and run lightweight evaluations to test effectiveness and outcomes.
Identify and document risks, limitations, and failure patterns.
Continuously refine prototypes using stakeholder and user feedback.
Collaborate with product and platform leads to reduce ambiguity and delivery risk.
Produce clear handover artefacts with validated approaches and recommendations.
Use modern agentic tools, stay current with advancements, and operate within ethical and safety boundaries.
There are five permanent role, which offer a flexible hybrid work model based in Naarm (Melbourne) or Gadigal Country (Sydney).
What You’ll Bring
Strong software engineering foundations with hands-on experience in Python or similar.
Practical experience building LLM or agentic applications through projects or early roles.
Understanding of agentic concepts like tool use, retrieval (RAG), memory, and orchestration.
Ability to analyse system behaviour, including edge cases, failures, and trade-offs.
Experience designing and running experiments with meaningful evaluation methods.
Strong communication skills to clearly document insights and share learnings.
Comfortable working in ambiguity with a bias toward rapid, hands-on experimentation.
Curious, fast learner who uses modern agentic tools and embraces feedback.
What We Offer
Boosted superannuation with 13% as standard. • 20 days annual leave + 5 days MyLeave (extra leave for what’s important to you). • Work from home and many more flexibility options with myFlex. • Up to 50% off personal insurance, including home and motor insurance. • Partner discounts on private health insurance, tech & appliances, and many more. • Industry-leading 20 weeks paid parental leave. • Access to LinkedIn Learning, the award-winning IAG Academy, study assistance and secondment opportunities.
