JOB SUMMARY
The Transit Fleet and Facilities Maintenance team provides safe, reliable, efficient, timely and cost-effective transit vehicle maintenance services to support federally regulated transit services within the City of Ottawa.
You develop job skills to the journeyperson level as an apprentice Truck and Coach Technician, under the guidance and direction of more experienced workers in the trade. You develop and apply learned job skills through a combination of on-the-job learning and in-class instruction.
Apprentices shall be trained in accordance with the prescribed apprenticeship program of the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, wherever compatible with City requirements and facilities. The City provides the Apprentice with a workplace, but Apprentices are required to comply with the Apprenticeship policies/procedures of the City of Ottawa, and the terms of the Apprenticeship Agreement that they sign with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, which is to meet the learning objectives, and master the skills of their trade.
As an apprentice, you learn and apply skills to perform a wide range of duties of the trade, including, but not limited to, the following: conducting diagnostic inspection of buses, performing general mechanical overhaul and repair work to buses, and performing daily maintenance repairs to buses. You perform all unit changes or repairs to transmission, brakes, suspensions, electrical components, injectors, radiators, steering, differentials and air systems; undertake major repairs to engines and transmissions; and make miscellaneous adjustments to doors, destination signs and other vehicle systems.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent (including Grade 12 Math and English)
Up to 1 year of practical, mechanical or machine shop experience in an automotive garage environment.
Completion of specialized motor vehicle courses is desirable
Previous experience in motor vehicle repair is an asset
Previous experience in automotive garage work is an asset
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES
Must be registered as an Apprentice with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development
Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
Must complete City training and obtain Ontario unrestricted CZ class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) within the timeframe determined by the employer, in order to operate a City of Ottawa bus
KNOWLEDGE
City policies and procedures affecting shop operations
Some knowledge of:
The standard methods, tools, and equipment used in the automotive mechanic trade
Diagnostic equipment
Personal computers, with ability to learn and use the Fleet Management Information System
Safe work practices of the trade
COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Successful completion of a pre-employment ergonomic assessment is required, if not previously tested
Work independently, with minimal direction, and collaboratively with peers and managers as part of a maintenance repair team
Read, and be able to interpret service manuals, schematics, drawings, and work orders
Apply knowledge and skills in the repair of Transit Fleet vehicles
Able to learn new skills in a timely manner
Operate within a computerized Fleet Management Information System
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Able to learn to use, operate and maintain tools and state-of-the-art automotive diagnostic and test equipment
Able to organize, clean and maintain a safe work area
Possess a keen interest in and aptitude for the trade
Possess a work record of good attendance and job performance
Possess sound judgement
Able to establish and maintain good working relationships with fellow employees
Possess good manual dexterity and the ability to work to close tolerances
Able to tolerate exposure to moderate amounts of noise, dust, grit, oil/grease, fumes, solvents, paints, lacquers, hot/sharp metals and surface finishing products
Physically fit, with stamina to perform the duties of Licenced Truck & Coach Technician (which may include working in a standing position for long time periods)
Able to work in uncomfortable or confined positions on occasion
Provide own hand tools relating to the trade according to provisions of the Collective Agreement
Able to work a variety of scheduled shifts, including week-ends and nights, as per the Collective Agreement

Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check (Level 2) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.

Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
