Responsibilities
The role acts as the primary point of contact for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates, providing support and guidance throughout their research journey. Responsibilities include coordinating researcher development activities, managing administrative processes, and fostering a culturally safe and inclusive environment.
Requirements
Candidates must be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and demonstrate cultural capability to work effectively with Indigenous students and stakeholders. Applicants should have experience in the tertiary education sector, strong administrative skills, and the ability to manage competing priorities.
This identified position plays a vital role in attracting, supporting and developing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates throughout their research journey. Working within the HDR Experience team in the Graduate Research School and in close partnership with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit (ATSIS), you will help create a culturally safe, supportive and inclusive experience for prospective and current HDR candidates. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to meaningful researcher development initiatives, strengthen candidate engagement and help create change together within a collaborative, purposeful and high performing environment.
Key responsibilities will include:
Acting as the first point of contact for prospective and current Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander HDR candidates, providing advice, support and referrals throughout the HDR lifecycle.
Coordinating Indigenous Researcher Development activities, including recruitment and admissions support, events, workshops, communications, travel arrangements and stakeholder engagement.
Managing administrative processes, candidate records, reporting, databases and CRM enquiries to ensure accurate and efficient service delivery.
Supporting continuous improvement initiatives, maintaining online and promotional information, and contributing to the effective delivery of Indigenous HDR programs.
The University of Queensland considers that to perform this role, it is essential that the person is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld).
The successful candidate will be required to provide evidence to confirm that they are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
You are a culturally capable and community minded professional who is passionate about supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in higher education and research pathways. You thrive in a collaborative environment and enjoy building meaningful relationships while delivering high quality services that make a positive difference.
Essential
You are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and demonstrate the cultural capability to work respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, communities and stakeholders.
You have experience in the tertiary education sector, with an understanding of student administration processes and an appreciation of the factors influencing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ experiences in higher education.
You possess strong organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
You have excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, a strong customer service focus, and the ability to build effective relationships with students, staff and external stakeholders.
You can work independently, exercise sound judgement and initiative, and confidently use administrative systems, databases and Microsoft Office applications.
Desirable
Experience supporting HDR candidates or knowledge of the HDR lifecycle will be highly regarded.
