Requires a Bachelor of Science in Earth Science, Zoology, Ecology, Biology, or a related field with experience in a scientific or tertiary teaching support environment. Must possess strong technical skills in equipment maintenance, laboratory safety, and digital tools.

As a Scientific and Technical Officer, you will contribute to hands-on teaching by supporting laboratory, field, and online learning programs, maintaining specialist equipment and facilities, and helping develop innovative practical learning experiences.
Working within a collaborative and world-class teaching environment, you’ll have opportunities to broaden your technical expertise, contribute to student success, and be part of a team committed to excellence, innovation, and positive impact.
Key responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
Support exceptional student learning by preparing and delivering laboratory and field practical classes, including setting up equipment, samples, reagents and teaching resources.
Collaborate with academic staff to develop, test and enhance innovative practical learning experiences that enrich undergraduate education.
Maintain specialist laboratories, equipment and teaching facilities, ensuring they are safe, well-equipped and operating to the highest standards.
Champion a safe and effective learning environment by promoting Workplace Health and Safety practices, training tutors and providing technical guidance to staff and students.
The position reports to the Manager, Scientific Teaching Services.
About You
Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Earth Science, Zoology, Ecology, Biology, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and training; Earth Science expertise is highly regarded.
Demonstrated experience in a scientific, research, or tertiary teaching support environment.
Proven ability to operate, demonstrate, troubleshoot, and maintain a broad range of scientific equipment with a strong focus on accuracy and attention to detail.
Experience supporting teaching laboratories, including the development, testing, and continuous improvement of practical classes and experiments.
Strong customer service skills with the ability to support students and academic staff and contribute to a positive learning environment.
Sound knowledge of laboratory safety requirements, including chemical handling, risk assessments, labelling, and compliance procedures.
Well-developed digital and technical skills, including Microsoft Office, web-based systems, and online or virtual teaching technologies.
Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, work independently, adapt to changing needs, and confidently work with animals and animal-based practical activities.
It is desirable to have or obtain the following: Current Senior First Aid qualification (or willingness to obtain), understanding of undergraduate practical experiments, and a manual driver's licence with four-wheel-drive experience or willingness to undertake training.
