Austin Bridge & Road is a leader in the heavy highway and transportation industry for more than 100 years, Austin Bridge & Road delivers asphalt and concrete services, and builds landmark projects such as complex highway interchanges, tollways, runways, bridges, rail projects, and water/wastewater facilities.
We are currently seeking an intern for our 2027 Summer Heavy Civil Safety Internship Program. As a summer intern you will gain intensive real world, hands-on jobsite experience directly from seasoned construction professionals at Austin's multi-million-dollar heavy civil construction projects. This is a paid 12 weeks full-time internship program that will start on Monday, May 17, 2027 and run through Friday, August 6, 2027. Our intern will report to their assigned project located in the Dallas/Fort Worth/North Texas area. Our intern will also participate in various social and volunteer events with fellow employee-owners and have the great opportunity to visit an active project site. Intern Learning Opportunities:
Gain hands-on experience in construction safety management within the heavy civil industry.
Participate in field operations involving earthwork, concrete placements, bridge construction, utility work, and other civil construction activities.
Learn about OSHA compliance, hazard recognition, incident investigation, risk assessment, and safety program administration.
Develop professional communication and leadership skills while working alongside project teams and safety professionals.
As an employee-owner hired for an internship, you will be given the title of “Project Safety Intern” and your duties could consist of:
Conduct daily jobsite walkthroughs to identify and report potential safety hazards.
Assist with safety inspections, audits, and reviews of active heavy civil construction projects.
Support incident and accident investigations, including collecting information and preparing reports.
Participate in weekly project safety meetings and assist with meeting documentation.
Help develop and deliver safety training, orientations, toolbox talks, and safety communications.
Monitor jobsite compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Assist in identifying workplace hazards and recommending corrective actions and control measures.
Support the maintenance of safety records, training documentation, and regulatory reporting.
Collaborate with field personnel, supervisors, and project management to promote a strong safety culture.
Assist with pre-job planning activities to integrate safety into project execution.
Help distribute weekly safety communications and awareness materials to field teams.
Observe and evaluate the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
Support environmental, industrial hygiene, and occupational health initiatives as assigned.
Research safety regulations, industry best practices, and emerging safety trends.
Provide administrative support for project safety programs and special initiatives.
Promote Austin's commitment to ensuring every employee returns home safely each day.
Other miscellaneous duties as defined by the Project Manager or Superintendent
Requirements:
Must be an active junior or senior college student working toward a bachelor's degree in one of these fields: Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or similar
Targeted graduation date between August 2027 and December 2028
Must be able to work up to 40 hours per week; hours will vary depending on project schedule
Must be able to commute onsite to assigned location
Valid driver's license
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
Must have the ability to think analytically, present ideas professionally, and work in project teams

Our interns are assigned a supervisor who is a professional with both expertise and educational background in the field. Interns can expect a preliminary meeting with their supervisor to discuss the goals, expectations, and desired outcomes of the internship. Employee-owners participating in an internship will be reviewed upon the completion of their internship. This review should be used as a tool to communicate the successes and learning outcomes of the internship. The supervisor will also complete any necessary paperwork that must be provided to the intern’s school or university.
Individuals hired as interns will be classified as Temporary employee-owners as defined in Policy A-5. Temporary employee-owners are not eligible for vacation pay, holiday pay or any of the other benefits listed in Policy A-5.
Temporary employee-owners are expected to adhere to the same policies and procedures as regular, full-time employee-owners.
Employee-owners that are performing an internship are expected to work a regularly-scheduled workweek of 40 hours or more (overtime will be paid for any hours in excess of 40 at a rate one and one-half times the employee-owner’s regular rate).
