The Brisbane site is a multi-product biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility supporting clinical and commercial products. The Operational Excellence (Practical Process Improvement – PPI) team partners across all business functions to improve safety, quality, delivery, cost, productivity and employee engagement through continuous improvement and capability development.
About the Role:
As an Operational Excellence Specialist, you will partner with cross-functional teams to deliver continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety, quality, delivery, productivity and customer experience. Using Lean methodologies and data-driven problem solving, you will help build a culture of operational excellence while developing your expertise in Thermo Fisher Scientific's Practical Process Improvement (PPI) Business System.
What You'll Do:
Lead continuous improvement projects using Lean and Practical Process Improvement (PPI) methodologies to improve safety, quality, delivery, productivity and customer experience.
Partner with Operations, Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, MSAT, Program Management, Finance and other business functions to identify and implement process improvements.
Analyse operational data, identify trends and support data-driven decision making using dashboards, KPIs and visual management.
Facilitate structured problem solving using Root Cause Analysis (RCA), A3 Thinking and other PPI methodologies.
Support implementation of Daily Management Systems, Tiered Accountability and Visual Management to improve operational performance.
Develop and maintain project plans, improvement dashboards and benefit tracking to ensure successful delivery of improvement initiatives.
Support Value Stream Mapping activities and continuous improvement workshops.
Support Kaizen events through planning, facilitation support, action tracking and sustainability activities.
Develop Standard Work and support process standardisation across functional teams.
Deliver introductory training and coaching on PPI tools, Lean principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
Support development of a sustainable continuous improvement culture through collaboration, coaching and knowledge sharing.
Contribute to the site productivity pipeline by identifying and developing improvement opportunities.
Ensure improvements are embedded through follow-up activities, audits and stakeholder engagement.
Keys to Success:
Education
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science or relevant discipline.
Advanced degree is advantageous.
Continuous Improvement training or certification is advantageous.
Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification or equivalent is desirable.
Experience
Minimum two years' experience applying Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen or continuous improvement methodologies.
Experience leading improvement or change initiatives within manufacturing or another operational environment.
Experience working within cross-functional teams.
Experience analysing operational data and developing practical improvement solutions.
Experience with project management methodologies is advantageous.
Experience within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device or other regulated manufacturing environments is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Sound knowledge of Lean and continuous improvement methodologies, including 5S, Visual Management, Standard Work, Value Stream Mapping, Root Cause Analysis and Daily Management Systems.
Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret operational data and identify opportunities for improvement.
Ability to translate ambiguous problems into clearly defined improvement opportunities using data analysis and structured problem-solving methodologies.
Effective project management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver outcomes.
Strong interpersonal, facilitation and communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively across all levels of the organisation without direct authority.
Ability to build trusted relationships and work effectively across multiple business functions.
Ability to support change initiatives and contribute to building a culture of continuous improvement.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and PowerPoint, for data analysis, reporting and presentations.
Proficiency in Smartsheets.
Self-motivated with a continuous improvement mindset, demonstrating initiative, curiosity and accountability for delivering sustainable business outcomes.
Physical Requirements / Work Environment
This role is primarily site based and requires regular interaction with manufacturing, laboratory and office environments. The successful candidate will participate in Gemba walks, improvement workshops and cross-functional meetings throughout the site while complying with all Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements.
