Gardening Volunteer - Children, Family and Community Services
Overview:
This requisition outlines the need for gardening volunteers within a shelter and group care home setting. Gardening activities offer numerous benefits to residents, including improved mental and physical health, a sense of purpose, and opportunities for social interaction.
We are seeking volunteers who are passionate about gardening, committed to supporting the well-being of our residents, and who are able to assist with the establishment, maintenance and enjoyment of gardens at our shelter and group care home locations. Volunteers will work under the guidance of staff to create and maintain gardens that provide fresh produce, enhance the environment, and offer therapeutic benefits to residents.
Responsibilities/Tasks:
- Assist with tasks such as planting, weeding, pruning, harvesting and maintaining flowers and vegetables
- Water plants and monitor soil health
- Remove weeds and maintain garden cleanliness
- Interact with residents, providing gardening instruction, and facilitating gardening activities
- Maintaining garden tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working order/condition
- Help with harvesting
- Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines provided by the shelter and group care home
Qualifications:
- Passion for gardening, farming, or horticulture and environmental sustainability
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Physical ability to perform gardening tasks such as bending, digging, lifting, shoveling and weeding
- Excellent communication skills
- Willingness to learn and collaborate with a team
- No prior experience required - But experience in the field will be an asset
Commitment:
- Minimum of three hours weekly
- Flexibility to work independently or with other volunteers, staff and residents
