Full job description

Weiss Asset Management Foundation is growing! We’re hiring an Impact Officer to design and execute rigorous frameworks to forecast the impact of proposals under consideration and to assess our impact to date. The Impact Officer will help manage a cost-effectiveness-driven grantmaking Request for Proposals program focused on global health and development. This position is based in Boston.

About Weiss Asset Management Foundation

The mission of Weiss Asset Management Foundation is to alleviate human suffering globally. We seek to improve lives through strategic funding and believe that a rigorous grant selection approach facilitates an outsized impact from our philanthropic resources. With an Allocation Committee composed of leading development economists and practitioners, the Foundation supports evidence-based, cost-effective, and scalable programs and research that we believe can deliver high, risk-adjusted social returns.

Our large and expanding grant portfolio supports programming and research across all sectors, including evidence-based nutrition programming for children suffering from severe acute malnutrition, research on an innovative training model to improve maternal and newborn health, and catalytic initiatives seeking to improve the livelihoods of farmers in low- and middle-income countries.

Weiss Asset Management Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Weiss Asset Management.

The Role

We are seeking a highly analytical, detail-oriented, and evidence-driven Impact Officer to lead the evaluation of our philanthropic initiatives. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring that the Foundation's resources are directed toward the most effective programs and research.

Working closely with Foundation leadership, the Impact Officer will help shape grant decision-making through cost-effectiveness analysis, rigorous application of global evidence, and structured logic and reasoning.

We are particularly interested in candidates with significant experience in economic evaluation, data analysis, and evidence-based decision-making within the context of global development. The ideal candidate will have a track record of working with quantitative and qualitative data to measure outcomes, the ability to translate complex analyses into actionable insights, and experience with cost-effectiveness analysis. Strong communication skills, intellectual curiosity, and a passion for global development are essential.

The Boston-based position requires occasional domestic and international travel. This position requires permanent work authorization in the United States; the Foundation is unable to provide visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

The list of responsibilities below is indicative-only; Weiss Asset Management Foundation is a small, start-up environment, and we expect our team to embrace and grow from a wide range of tasks.

Evaluation of Expected Cost-Effectiveness

  • Develop models to measure and analyze the expected outcomes and cost-effectiveness of proposals and grants.
  • Produce detailed cost-effectiveness analyses for shortlisted proposals.
  • Collaborate with grantees to establish indicators and reporting structures.

Impact Assessment and Reporting

  • Analyze program performance against key metrics to determine the social return on investment and identify areas for improvement.
  • Synthesize findings into clear, actionable recommendations for the Allocation Committee and broader Foundation team.
  • Produce impact reports and presentations for internal stakeholders and external partners.

Strategic Support and Insights

  • Contribute to the refinement of the Foundation’s overall philanthropic strategy by incorporating evaluation learnings.
  • Identify high-potential opportunities for funding by analyzing research and past performance data.
  • Stay informed on the latest methodologies and best practices in impact evaluation and cost-effectiveness analysis at peer organizations.

Collaborative Engagement

  • Share insights and learn from peers in the field.
  • Partner with Foundation leadership to foster a culture of learning and continuous improvement within the Foundation.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Training in microeconomics and econometrics, with a preference for experience modeling expected cost-effectiveness and analyzing proposed interventions within a global development context.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
  • A strong academic background in economics, public policy, international development, or a related field (Master’s degree or higher preferred).
  • Exceptional skills in quantitative and qualitative analysis, with proficiency in relevant software/tools (e.g., R, Stata, or similar).
  • A collaborative and mission-oriented approach, with the judgment and interpersonal skills to contribute positively to a high-performing team.

Compensation

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Total compensation, inclusive of salary and employer retirement contributions, is expected in the range of $130,000-$200,000. Weiss Asset Management Foundation offers competitive benefits, including a 100% match on 401(k) contributions.
