COMPANY DESCRIPTION:

Union Rescue Mission (URM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. We are dedicated to serving men, women, and children experiencing homelessness and providing comprehensive emergency and long-term services to help them escape the dangerous streets of Skid Row. Established in 1891, URM is now one of the largest rescue missions of its kind in the United States and the oldest in Los Angeles. Join us at Union Rescue Mission as we bring hope and share the compassion of Christ to those devastated by homelessness.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provide recovery support and program management for CLDP Guests at Angeles House. Work closely with the CLDP Leadership Team and Staff to ensure all core values and principles are implemented. 

CORE WORK PRINCIPLE:

Colossians 3:23 is the foundation of URM’s standard for employment, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord and not for people.” The goal for each employee is to enrich and sustain a humble heart attitude; to enrich and sustain a mindset of serving others, treating them with kindness and truth; and to enrich and sustain a zealous desire for achieving work objectives without any ulterior motives or agendas. 

RECOVERY COUNSELOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare, teach, and lead recovery and life skills classes for CLDP guests. 
  • Conduct individual counseling and case management and facilitate process groups. 
  • Create Individualized Service Plans (ISP’s) for assigned CLDP caseload.
  • Maintain timely, thorough documentation of case notes and outcome execution in Mission Tracker. 
  • Collaborate with staff, clients and community partners for program case planning and implementation. 
  • Implement crisis intervention and decision making that impacts the overall functioning of the program.  
  • Serve as liaison for professional services provided for CLDP, as needed. 
  • Provide leadership in critical incidents and implementation of policy and procedure. 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders and community partners. 
  • Conduct other duties as assigned by the Director of Transformation Program.  
  • Commitment to URM mission, vision, and core values.  
  • Encourage guests in their faith, discipleship, and growth in their relationship with Jesus Christ.

  • Must be able to see, hear, speak, and write clearly to communicate with employees, residents, and/or guests.  
  • Required manual dexterity for occasional reaching and lifting objects, and operating office equipment.

  • The office is clean, orderly, properly lighted, and ventilated. 
  • Noise levels are considered low to moderate. 
  • This position predominantly works indoors in a high traffic office.  

Requirements

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND LICENSURES:

  • Equivalent of bachelor’s degree in psychology, human services, or social work OR CADC, CADTP, CCAPP certifications.
  • Master’s degree in psychology or related field, a plus. 
  • 2+ years progressively responsible, related experience (social services, community relations). 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • A thorough knowledge of the behavior, character and emotional issues of the clients served at Angeles House, URM and Hope Gardens, including a comprehensive understanding of trauma, addiction and the process of recovery. 
  • Ability to research and keep abreast of evidence-based best practices in the fields of psychology and recovery. 
  • A proven track record of the use of an asset-based approach with clients.
  • Trained and experienced in de-escalation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 
  • Strong skills in planning, organizing, communication, counseling, and leadership. 
  • Ability to manage time, prioritize multiple tasks, and respond to emergencies. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. 
  • Bilingual preferred, but not required.
