About the Organization

The California Domestic Workers Coalition (CDWC), a fiscally-sponsored project of Center for Empowered Politics Education Fund, is a coalition of grassroots domestic worker organizations and their supporters from the labor, faith, domestic employer, women and other grassroots communities, who are working to advance the rights of domestic workers. In California, there are approximately 300,000 domestic workers.  We have come together as a statewide network to build the leadership and political power of domestic workers and to ensure that statewide laws and agencies protect domestic workers. Finally, we work to inspire all Californians to uphold the dignity of domestic workers inside and outside of our homes.

Position Overview

The Statewide Organizer reports directly to the Campaigns Manager to lead campaign execution, supports government-funded outreach and education initiatives in the San Francisco Bay Area, and builds strong relationships with affiliate organizations, community partners, labor allies, and public agencies.The position also supports innovative worker-led initiatives, including homecare cooperative development, while ensuring alignment between local organizing efforts and statewide coalition priorities. 

Responsibilities

• Campaign Strategy Implementation (35%)

  • Organize and mobilize the coalition’s domestic worker and employer members and allies to take collective action in Northern California and across the state in order to win campaigns that advance the dignity and power of domestic workers in California. 

  • Implement the coalition’s campaign strategies and activities, helping to ensure that we collectively achieve our goals and that all coalition campaigns are utilized as vehicles toward building the base, leadership, and power of domestic workers.

  • Lead one-on-one check-ins and follow up with coalition affiliate organizations in order to deepen the coalition's understanding of conditions on the ground, ensure alignment with coalition goals and preparation for coalition activities, and continue a praxis of feedback and evaluation.

  • Facilitate creative and dynamic coalition spaces with diverse audiences, including domestic workers, organizers, and allies, that deepen our collective understanding and unity across coalition organizations and that result in clarity of purpose and next steps to advance coalition priorities.

  • Act as the project manager for the implementation of campaign goals and strategy: convene regular meetings with members and stakeholders to advance campaign timelines and reach campaign benchmarks.

• Organize, synthesize, and share notes, materials, key takeaways, and next steps, in order to ensure affiliate members’ access, clarity, and meaningful engagement across the coalition.

• Provide hands-on field support to affiliate organizations in their organizing efforts, including managing in-person logistics such as food, interpretation, and transport of members and participating directly in campaign activities. 

• Act as an advocate for domestic workers at legislative visits, hearings, town halls and other political activities both in the local Bay Area as well as in Sacramento.

• Build relationships with local elected offices as well as local government agencies, including SF Board of Supervisors’ offices, and the Office of Labor Standards & Enforcement.

• Build and strengthen relationships with local unions, community-based organizations  and organizational allies in the Bay Area and represent CDWC in local alliances and coalition spaces.

• Program Implementation (30%)

  • Lead the implementation of government partnership programs in the San Francisco Bay area, through the coordination and support of Bay Area based affiliates that participate in the statewide Domestic and Residential Care Worker and Employer Outreach and Education Program (DWEOP), as well as San Francisco City-Based outreach and enforcement programs.

  • Provide technical assistance, training, accountability, and support for outreach, education, membership development, organizing, enforcement and base-building goals, through monthly coaching sessions for DWEOP Project Team Organizations in San Francisco (Mujeres Unidas y Activas, La Colectiva de Mujeres of Mission Action, Filipino Community Center, Chinese Progressive Association, and others).

  • Ensure strategic alignment and integration of campaign and coalition goals within program  implementation in San Francisco and Bay Area

  • Support the development of organizational and collective program goals for the government partnerships, and track, communicate, and support accountability to reaching both individual and collective deliverables for government contracts. 

• Homecare Cooperative Development (15%)

  • Represent CDWC within the Vivid Life Homecare Coop Initiative design team, in order to learn about and advance innovative worker organizing models that create pathways for worker ownership, self-determination, and the creation of fair jobs in the domestic work sector.

  • Act as a liaison between the VividLife design team and CDWC staff team to provide organizational input and strategize the role of CDWC within the project.

  • Support and learn alongside CDWC affiliates who are acting as (or interested in acting as) community-based incubators of homecare cooperatives, and gather, synthesize, and share lessons with the broader coalition.

• Support CDWC Organizational-Wide Priorities (10%)

  • Support the creation and implementation of staff and coalition culture, practices, and organizational operating procedures that are aligned with CDWC Values.

  • Provide staffing support for Coalition meetings, mobilizations and other activities, including and not limited to: providing language interpretation for smaller groups, translating documents, tech support, note-taking, and timekeeping.

  • Facilitate agenda items, relationship-building activities and break out groups.

  • Take on day-of activity roles that may or may not reflect primary areas of work.

  • Build relationships with Coalition members.

  • Participate in all meetings including bi-weekly all-staff meetings and bi-weekly Steering Committee prep calls and meetings. Participation may include creating agendas, facilitating, tech support, note-taking, and timekeeping.

Required Qualifications

• 3-5 years of organizing experience in the worker justice movement—or in movements rooted in labor, immigrant rights, racial justice, or gender justice. 

• Demonstrated passion for CDWC’s mission to build power and improve conditions for domestic workers.

• Demonstrated commitment to racial and gender equity. 

• Ability to travel throughout California, including the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento, and participate in evening or weekend activities.

• Experience working with immigrant communities, domestic workers, workers’ rights organizations, or social justice movements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience developing plans and strategy for community organizing, labor organizing, coalition building, or grassroots advocacy.

• Strong facilitation and relationship-building skills and ability to implement organizing strategies across diverse communities and stakeholders.

• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, timelines, and campaign priorities.

• Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish and/or another language commonly spoken by domestic worker communities is highly desirable.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including meeting facilitation, note-taking, and report preparation.

• Valid drivers license and comfortable driving a personal or rental vehicle for work-related travel

• Background organizing within SF political landscape, including advocacy with the SF Board of Supervisors and local municipal agencies

Work Environment / Physical Demands

This is a hybrid remote position based in the San Francisco Bay Area with regular visits to both CDWC office locations in Oakland and SF in addition to travel across the state of CA as needed.  Able to work on a computer including sitting at a desk for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation; manual dexterity to operate a keyboard; able to see or read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; able to speak clearly and in audible tones on the phone and in-person and be understood by others; able to hear and understand speech, including on the phone; able to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Must be able to stretch, bend, kneel, twist, squat, reach above or below the shoulder, push, grasp, and lift up to 48 pounds. Able to walk, drive, write, stand, and sit.

Employment Terms

This is a full time position. This position is 40 hours per week. This position has a pay range of $32.70 - $37.50 per hour (estimated at $68,000-78,000 annually) depending on experience. This position is non-exempt. This is also a union position, with terms and conditions set forth in a Collective Bargaining Agreement, which is in the process of being negotiated.
