The Opportunity
The Commercial Property Underwriting Assistant provides underwriting, technical, and operational support to property underwriters across straight-up, quota share, and excess commercial property placements, including Equipment Breakdown solutions.
This role supports the end-to-end underwriting process, including submission intake, risk analysis, data management, pricing support, policy issuance, and portfolio reporting. The Assistant will assist in evaluating both catastrophic and non-catastrophic exposures, while ensuring data accuracy and integrity across underwriting and policy administration systems.
Working closely with underwriters, actuaries, and cross functional partners, the Assistant plays a key role in enhancing underwriting efficiency, supporting data driven decision making, and maintaining high quality standards across all underwriting outputs.
The position offers the opportunity to develop technical underwriting expertise and progress into an underwriting role over time.
What You’ll Be Doing
Underwriting and Portfolio Support
- Support the triage and processing of new business and renewal submissions
- Assist in the technical evaluation of property risks, including catastrophe and non-catastrophe exposures
- Coordinate and track renewal pipelines, including preparation of monthly renewal summaries
- Partner with underwriters throughout the underwriting lifecycle to support account analysis and execution
Data Management and Analysis
- Compile, validate, and maintain underwriting and portfolio data across systems
- Monitor data quality and ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with underwriting standards
- Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and metrics to support underwriting and portfolio management
- Identify trends, exposures, and areas of concern to support underwriting decisions
Policy Administration and Quality Control
- Support data entry and maintenance within policy administration systems
- Assist in the preparation and issuance of quotes, binders, endorsements, and policy documentation
- Perform quality control reviews of policy documents, including declarations, endorsements, and exclusions
- Maintain organized and complete electronic underwriting files
Process Improvement and Operational Efficiency
- Identify opportunities to improve underwriting workflows, data capture, and system utilization
- Support automation initiatives across submission intake, pricing, issuance, and reporting processes
- Assist in driving efficient policy issuance and tracking timelines against service standards
Catastrophe and Risk Coordination
- Coordinate catastrophe exposure analysis to support underwriting decisions
- Track and manage key underwriting inputs such as statements of values, BI worksheets, and risk control data
- Liaise with brokers, risk engineers, and reinsurers to gather and validate required information
Audit, Compliance, and Reporting
- Support internal underwriting audits, including file reviews and documentation validation
- Ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal controls
- Assist in producing management and production reporting
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Collaborate with underwriting, actuarial, claims, risk control, and operations teams
- Support clear communication with brokers and external partners as required
- Participate in industry events and maintain awareness of market trends and emerging risks
Who You Are
You bring:
- 3 to 5 years of experience in property and casualty insurance
- Experience supporting commercial property underwriting, preferably in the upper mid-market or large account segment
- Familiarity with property policy wordings, underwriting documentation, and data management
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and generate insights
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English required; fluency in French preferred but not required.
- Collaborative mindset with strong relationship building capabilities
- Adaptability and comfort working in a dynamic and evolving environment
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas and pivot tables
- Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
- Experience with underwriting, policy administration, or data systems is an asset
- Familiarity with data visualization, automation tools, or Copilot is an asset
- Self-motivated with a proactive and solutions oriented mindset
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability

The anticipated base salary range for this position is (50,000-65,000). Compensation may vary for roles in other regions to reflect local market conditions and currency differences. At Tokio Marine Canada, our salary ranges are designed to reflect the skills, experience, and responsibilities required for each role while providing room for growth. For experienced professionals, offers are typically positioned near the midpoint of the range. The upper end of the range is reserved for individuals who consistently deliver exceptional performance and impact. Candidates who are newer to the role may start below the midpoint, with opportunities to progress as they develop. Final offer decisions take into account factors such as location, relevant experience, and individual skill set.

We work in a hybrid model, and you should expect to split your time between working in the office and working remotely, with flexibility based on the role and the business needs. We currently have an office in downtown Toronto and will eventually be establishing offices in other provinces.
