LOCATION: Whittier, CA

SALARY: $25-30/hour

JOB STATUS: Non-exempt, Full-time

REPORTS TO: Manager of Communications & Community Engagement

 

JOB OVERVIEW: 

The Communication Coordinator supports the implementation of The Whole Child's communications, marketing, branding, and community engagement efforts. Working under the direction of the Manager of Communications & Community Engagement, this position assists with content creation, social media management, internal and external communications, event support, website updates, storytelling, and brand consistency. This is an excellent opportunity for an organized, creative, and collaborative communications professional looking to grow their career in the nonprofit sector. This position receives mentorship and professional development from the Manager of Communications & Community Engagement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Content Creation and Storytelling

  • Create engaging social media content across platforms.
  • Capture photo and video content at agency events, outside events and programs.
  • Assist with editing short-form videos, reels, and promotional content.
  • Draft social media captions, newsletters, blogs, and website content.
  • Assist with developing client success stories, staff spotlights, and impact stories.
  • Assist with annual reports and organizational publications.
  • Assist with photography and video editing for agency communications.

Social Media and Digital Communications

  • Manage social media scheduling and publishing.
  • Monitor engagement and community interactions.
  • Assist with tracking social media and email marketing performance.
  • Support digital awareness campaigns.
  • Assist with email marketing and newsletters.
  • Maintain the communications content calendar.

Internal Communications

  • Support employee communications and newsletters.
  • Assist with staff recognition initiatives.
  • Coordinate agency-wide communications materials.
  • Maintain internal communication resources.

External Communications

  • Assist with the development and distribution of external newsletters and email communications.
  • Draft content for community announcements, agency updates, and outreach campaign.
  • Support communications with community partners, funders, and stakeholders.
  • Assist with maintaining email marketing lists and audience segmentation.
  • Help monitor external email marketing performance and engagement metric.
  • Assist with promoting agency programs, events, and services through external communications channels.

Event and Community Engagement

  • Attend agency events, fundraisers, and community outreach activities.
  • Coordinate event photography and videography.
  • Support event promotion and communications.
  • Assist with community awareness campaigns.
  • Represent The Whole Child at community events as assigned.

Brand Management and Graphic Design

  • Create flyers, brochures, presentations, and marketing materials.
  • Ensure brand consistency across all communications.
  • Maintain digital asset libraries and templates.

Website and Administrative Support

  • Assist with website updates and routine website maintenance.
  • Maintain communication files and digital assets.
  • Coordinate department communication requests.
  • Collaborate with agency programs and departments to support communication and marketing needs.
  • Coordinate with program staff to gather stories, photos, updates, and other content for agency communications.
  • Assist departments with communication requests and the development of promotional materials.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Graphic Design, or a related field preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • 1–2 years of communications, marketing, public relations, social media, internship, or related experience preferred.

Preferred

  • Experience in Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Mailchimp, and Microsoft Office suite is preferred.
  • Experience editing short-form video using Adobe Premiere Pro, CapCut, or similar software is a plus.
  • Experience with photography and videography.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

REASONING ABILITY: 

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed in a normal office setting and out in the community.
  • Noise level is moderate with occasional loud outbursts.
  • This is a field-based position and requires 50% driving.
  • Will require a personal motor vehicle to frequently travel between offices and community events.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time
  • Needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, (i.e., copy machine and computer printer)
  • Constantly converses with staff and clients
  • Occasionally needs to transport boxes and/or equipment of up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequently operates motor vehicle for business purposes
