Job Purpose

The Communications Specialist is responsible for the development, creation, and visual alignment of written and digital content to expand AFTD's impact, reach, and community engagement.

Job Summary

Under the guidance of the Graphic Design & Content Manager, the Communications Specialist will collaborate with AFTD staff to ensure the timely promotion of FTD awareness and AFTD resources. They are responsible for writing, editing, and proofreading various AFTD materials, while also assisting in the creation of digital graphics, email journeys, and high-impact PowerPoint presentations.

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Job Functions

Content & Copywriting: In accordance with AP and AFTD's style guides, write, edit, and proofread engaging content for AFTD emails, newsletters, blogs, website pages, and other publications.
Graphic Assistance & Visual Assets: Assist in the creation and formatting of digital graphics, marketing collateral, and PowerPoint presentations, ensuring all materials align strictly with AFTD's visual brand guidelines.
Email Journeys: Set up, design, and execute email journeys using Marketing Cloud. Work across departments to draft and format email content.
Newsletters: Assist in the content creation, layout, and cross-departmental coordination for the weekly Help & Hope newsletter and other strategic publications.
Webinars & Multimedia Support: Prepare presentation slides, manage tech logistics, and coordinate with presenters to run Zoom webinars. Manage staff tasks according to the webinar SOP.
Proofreading & Quality Control: Serve as a primary proofreader for department deliverables, applying an exceptional eye for detail, grammar, and brand consistency.

Other Job Functions

Assist in maintaining and updating AFTD's website content and digital assets in collaboration with subject matter experts.
Assist the team by using tools like Meltwater to track FTD-related stories, draft media pitches, and conduct outreach.
Other duties as assigned to support the evolving needs of the team and broader organization.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is an individual contributor and does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

QualificationsKnowledge, skills, and abilities required for this role:

Education

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

Experience

2-4 years of professional communications experience. Experience handling a hybrid workload of writing and digital asset creation is highly preferred.

Special Knowledge/Skills

Writing & Editing Skills: Exceptional copywriting, line-editing, and proofreading skills, with a firm grasp of AP Style.
Design & Presentation Skills: Proficiency in designing highly professional graphics. Experience using Adobe Creative Suite and Canva preferred
Technical Knowledge: Experience with, or a strong capacity to quickly learn, digital platforms such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud, WordPress, and Meltwater.
Ability to be flexible and adaptable to work on a wide variety of projects; lending support where needed.
Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively in order to meet deadlines.
Proven ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to approach work with a pleasant and professional demeanor.
