OVERVIEW

Sunwealth is a clean energy investment firm on a mission to change who benefits from renewable energy by changing the way we invest in it. We envision a future where renewable energy is accessible, affordable and inclusive. We invest in that future by financing and managing renewable energy projects that benefit diverse communities through clean power, carbon reduction, cost savings and job creation.

Sunwealth offices are located in Cambridge’s Porter Square and New York City’s Financial District. We work on a hybrid schedule, ideally three (3) days per week in the Cambridge office.

The Senior Accountant will play a key role on a small, collaborative team and support the Manager of Accounting in managing the financial and accounting operations of the company. This individual will partner closely with stakeholders across the organization, bringing strong analytical skills, curiosity, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

If you thrive in an entrepreneurial, mission-driven environment and enjoy taking ownership, improving processes, and building relationships across teams, we encourage you to apply.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own assigned aspects of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, and variance analysis.
  • Prepare and analyze balance sheet reconciliations and income statement fluctuations, identifying trends, investigating discrepancies, and communicating findings effectively.
  • Assist in the preparation of internal and external financial reporting requirements, including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and prepare supporting documentation and analyses required during annual audits.
  • Partner with Project Managers and other business stakeholders to review contract documentation, change orders, billing matters, and the accounting implications of operational decisions.
  • Serve as a trusted accounting resource to cross-functional teams by clearly communicating financial information to both finance and non-finance audiences.
  • Oversee the accounts payable process to ensure timely and accurate processing of invoices and payments while maintaining strong internal controls.
  • Prepare, review, and facilitate invoice payments related to construction projects, ensuring all required approvals and supporting documentation are obtained.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and investigate unusual or unreconciled items to ensure completeness and accuracy of financial records.
  • Prepare state and local property tax filings, business tax returns, and related payments.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes, strengthen internal controls, and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of accounting operations.
  • Recommend and implement approved improvements to billing, payment, and reporting processes.
  • Perform special projects, research assignments, and ad hoc analyses to support business initiatives and strategic decision-making.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • CPA designation or progress toward CPA certification is preferred but not required.
  • Four (4) to seven (7) years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within renewable energy, project accounting, construction, real estate, or similarly complex operational environments.
  • Proficiency with accounting systems, including Sage Intacct (preferred) or other ERP platforms.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and strong proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience supporting month-end close processes, financial reporting, account reconciliations, and audit activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and consistently meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience partnering effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve organizational objectives and improve business processes.

DESIRED TRAITS

We are seeking someone who brings not only technical accounting expertise but also the mindset and interpersonal skills needed to succeed in a collaborative and evolving environment.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Natural curiosity and a desire to understand the "why" behind transactions, processes, and business decisions.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities, including the capacity to identify issues, evaluate alternatives, and develop practical solutions.
  • A proactive, resourceful approach to problem-solving and a willingness to take ownership of challenges through resolution.
  • High attention to detail while maintaining the ability to see the broader business context.
  • Adaptability and resilience when navigating changing priorities and ambiguity.
  • A collaborative mindset and a willingness to contribute wherever needed within a small, mission-driven organization.
  • A commitment to continuous learning, professional growth, and process improvement.
  • Interest in renewable energy, sustainability, or impact investing is a plus.

TEAM CULTURE & BENEFITS

  • Smart, effective and highly motivated team committed to creating generational change in renewable energy
  • Casual, collaborative and results-driven work environment
  • Beautiful, bright and centrally located office, accessible by public transit
  • Competitive compensation package
  • Health insurance, including medical, dental, and vision
  • Voluntary Life Insurance & AD&D
  • 401K plan with company contribution of 4%
  • Opportunities for professional development
  • Monthly reimbursement for wellness
  • A commitment to work-life balance
  • 15 paid holidays
  • Generous PTO and wellness days, including quarterly volunteer opportunities
