SUMMARY

Under direction of Engineering Management, the San Diego Theatres Building Engineer is responsible for operation of the physical plant of the various building of the Civic Center Plaza, known as Central Power. This position may also assist the Heavy Duty Engineers for maintenance of all mechanical equipment, and plumbing and electrical systems within the Theatres complex.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, though other duties may be assigned.

Continuously develop personal understanding of SDT Mission, Vision and Values Statements.
Maintain an expert level proficiency of SDT and Engineering division policies and procedures.
Operate and control physical plant and all associated mechanical, HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems and subsystems, including fire and life safety systems and manning the emergency telephone in Central Power.
Maintain operational and temperature records for all machinery and systems in operation.
Make minor adjustments and repairs to all machinery and equipment in the Central Power.
Temporary and emergency repairs to plumbing fixtures and systems.
Test and maintain proper water treatment levels on all open and closed loop water systems.
Recording the electrical and water meter readings.
Communicating with email and telephone with other SDT departments.

REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, plus:

Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to diplomatically and tactfully resolve difficult and sensitive situations.
Possess exceptional ethics, honesty, and integrity as well as complete respect for confidentiality and the appropriateness of communication.
Ability and expectation to work irregular hours, nights, weekends, holidays.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports, and other business-related documents as needed.
Proficiency in the Microsoft Suite of tools. Office365, Microsoft Teams and SharePoint skills a plus.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to understand instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to solve multiple problems involving varying situations in a fast-paced environment.

General understanding of

Air conditioning and refrigeration theories and practices.
Electric and electrical system theories and practices.
Operation and maintenance of fire and life safety systems.
Plumbing and water distribution and waste water system practices.
Electric, electronic, pneumatic and DDC control systems theories and practices.
Energy management theories and practices.
Convention and performing arts operations including terminology.
Hazardous materials management theories and practices.
Steam generation and heat exchange theories and practices.
Industrial safety theories and practices.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

At least 2 years of accredited technical degree, related to HAVC, refrigeration, or electrical.
3 years’ experience in facilities maintenance and physical plant operations, preferably in the convention and performing arts industry; and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must be a certified E.P.A refrigerant, type universal technician as required by 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart F.
For all new employees hired after July 1, 2014, as a condition of employment, those employees are required to secure and maintain current BOMA Certification within 24 months of their hire date. Failure to secure BOMA Certification within 24 months of their hire date and/or failure to maintain current BOMA Certification after that time shall be subject to termination for cause.
Fork lift certification (preferred, not required).
Any other technical certification/license is preferred.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, outside contractors and vendors.
Experience in collecting and organizing machinery and equipment operating data.
Ability to work flexible hours including availability to work evenings, holidays and weekends.
Must be available for shift work – Central Power department is staffed 24/7.

Climb steps repeatedly
Descend/ascend ramps and inclines/declines
Stand for long periods of time.
Position requires sitting.
Work in a fast-paced, busy environment with environmental conditions such as noise, heights, dark/dim/absence of lighting
Use hands to press, finger, handle and feel tools or objects, reach with hands and arms.
Ability to bend, stretch, reach and kneel.
Ability to frequently lift, hold, and move 50lbs, and occasionally lift, hold, and move up to 80lbs.
Must be able to open doors repeatedly throughout shift.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Occasional exposure to: fumes or airborne particles, toxic chemicals, extreme heat and wet and/or humid conditions.

Frequent exposure to: high, precarious places, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, loud noise level. Ear/hearing protection will be provided if necessary.
