About the Role:

The EHS Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring a safe and compliant work environment by developing, implementing, and maintaining environmental, health, and safety programs across the organization. This position is responsible for identifying potential hazards, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local regulations. The specialist collaborates with various departments to promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility, driving continuous improvement initiatives. They also lead training sessions and emergency response planning to prepare employees for potential incidents. Ultimately, the EHS Specialist helps minimize workplace risks, protect employee well-being, and support sustainable business operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in environmental, health, and safety roles within a manufacturing environment, specifically within chemical manufacturing, 
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, EPA standards, and other relevant federal and state laws.
  • Proven ability to conduct risk assessments, audits, and incident investigations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to train and influence employees.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or similar certification.
  • Experience with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.
  • Familiarity with hazardous waste management and chemical safety protocols.
  • Proficiency in EHS software and data management tools.
  • Experience working in manufacturing, construction, or energy sectors.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential safety and environmental hazards.
  • Coordinate site hazard communication program, including SDS management and required training. 
  • Develop, implement, and update EHS policies and procedures in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Investigate incidents and near-misses, prepare reports, and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Coordinate and deliver EHS training Learning Management Systems (LMS) programs to new hires, employees, and contractors, at all levels to promote awareness and compliance.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and ensure the organization remains compliant with OSHA, EPA, and other relevant standards.
  • Collaborate with management, engineering, employees within a union environment, operations, and support staff employees to foster a proactive safety culture and continuous improvement.
  • Manage documentation related to EHS activities, including permits, reports, and training records.
  • Support emergency preparedness and response planning, including drills and communication protocols.

The EHS Specialist utilizes their technical knowledge of safety regulations and environmental laws daily to assess workplace conditions and ensure compliance. Strong analytical skills are applied when conducting risk assessments and incident investigations to identify root causes and develop effective corrective actions. Organizational skills help manage multiple projects, maintain accurate documentation, and track regulatory changes. Additionally, proficiency with EHS software tools enhances data analysis and reporting capabilities, supporting informed decision-making and continuous improvement.
