The Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi is Hawaiʻi’s oldest and largest non-profit public interest law firm with offices statewide. Through its dedicated staff, Legal Aid helps ensure justice and fairness for all by providing civil legal aid to the most vulnerable in our society.

Positions Description:

The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii seeks Full-Time (37.5 hours per week) Family Law Paralegal based out of the Honolulu office. The paralegal may work in all areas of Legal Aid’s family law practice including Divorce, Paternity, Adoptions, Guardianships, Guardian Ad Litem in child abuse and Neglect cases, and other general family law matters. Primary responsibilities include document preparation and filing, interviewing clients and other relevant individuals, conducting home and school visits, writing extensive court reports, and preparing and filing various court forms, processing limited direct referral applications, program development and outreach and education.

All candidates should meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Passing necessary state and federal background checks.
  • Ability to work independently under the supervision of one or more attorneys.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, but at a minimum applicants should have an Associate’s degree or equivalent from two-year College or technical school or equivalent experience.
  • Paralegal experience strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge and professional experience with the child abuse and neglect system from either a legal, social services, or investigative perspective strongly preferred;
  • Experience in case/client management strongly preferred;
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams), required.

  • Able to work collaboratively and maintain good working relationships in small working group.
  • Culturally sensitive and able to work well with diverse, low-income populations, and familiarity with local community needs strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrable commitment to social justice or experience working with disadvantaged and/or low-income population, or issues affecting low-income populations preferred.
  • Able to perform multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Sensitivity to resource limitations.
  • Able to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.
  • Access to an automobile or other means of reliable transportation on a daily basis required.
  • Fluency in a language other than English is a plus, but not required.
  • Valid Hawaii Driver’s License, valid registration and insurance and access to a vehicle on a regular basis.

Compensation: $21.74 - $28.80/hour commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Hybrid work hours are available, subject to program and office needs. Hybrid working conditions are subject to change.
