Summary of Functions

 

The Juvenile Justice Coordinator will implement a Juvenile Justice Program to address the needs of juveniles who fall within the court’s jurisdiction. The Program goals will be to provide an alternative to formal adjudication of offenses committed by juveniles, and to provide support and referral in accessing services and completing terms and conditions of diversion, deferred prosecution and sentencing alternatives. The Coordinator will assist in establishing and maintaining a Juvenile Justice Diversion Team, and in the development and implementation of the Youth Program Grant’s Strategic Plan.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

• The Coordinator will perform intake assessments of juvenile offenders, and consider family and community-based factors in making recommendations to the Court, Prosecutor and Diversion Team on whether a particular youth should be a candidate for the Program.
• The Coordinator will develop an individualized “Plan of Action” for participants, taking into account the youth’s strengths, weaknesses and needs, designed to get the juvenile on the “right path.”
• The Coordinator will monitor the youth’s progress and make reports to the Court, Prosecutor and Diversion Team, including whether the youth is accomplishing his or her goals, needs additional services and support, or should be dropped from the Program.
• The Coordinator will measure the success of different aspects of the Plan of Action, and recommend amendments when necessary, keeping track of what type of

services, support and activities work best with particular youth.                    

• The Coordinator will work closely with the Diversion Team in the selection of traditional and remedial projects, and meet with the Team on a regular basis to devise new strategies or enhance existing ones to ensure the best chance of success for the youth and the Program.
• The Coordinator will maintain juvenile justice data for grant purposes, ensure grant requirements and conditions are being followed and complete grant reports in a timely manner.
• Establish and distribute the agenda for Diversion Team meetings
• Take and distribute the minutes from Diversion Team meetings
• Assist in scheduling meetings for the juvenile, parent or guardian
• Assist in obtaining a signed Diversion Agreement
• Assisting in referrals for legal counsel when necessary
• Assist in finding and/or suggesting helpful resources to the juvenile, parent or guardian
• Coordinating, needs assessment, data collection and analysis
• Assist in development and implementation of Tribal Youth Program Grant Strategic Plan, Performance Measures and Grant reporting requirements
• Schedule and maintain records of meetings held by the Juvenile Justice Intervention Advisory Board
• Organize monthly prevention and intervention activities to impact court-involved youth
• Additional duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

 

• This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Education

•  High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
• Bachelor’s degree in a social sciences or  closely related field from and accredited school.

 

Experience

 

• Three years of successful full-time experience in the juvenile justice system required.

 

Skills

• A Tribal or Community member with strong knowledge of Native American cultures preferred.
• Good oral and written communication skills required.
• Strong organizational and computer skills required.
• Knowledge and understanding of issues and dynamics within Native American families preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information with complete confidentiality
• This position requires the ability to interact and work well with the public.
• This position requires the ability to work independently and flexible hours with little supervision.

 

Other Requirements

 

• This position requires a team player that is committed and dependable.
• A valid driver’s license and eligibility for automobile insurance is required.
• All offers of employment are contingent upon passing the pre-employment Drug and Alcohol screening.
• Employment is contingent upon favorable outcome of a required criminal background check.
• Must be able to pass a Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) background check.

 

Physical Demands

 

• Significant portions of the job require extended sedentary periods; constant work with computers, including extended periods of keyboarding; and repetitive motion of hands and wrists.
• This position requires the ability to bend, stoop, lift, carry and move items weighing up to 20 pounds.
• This position requires significant local travel and occasional out-of-town travel.
• Occasional evening meetings and weekend work.  On-call status for emergency hearings required.

• This position is performed primarily in an office environment.
