Job Title: CREW LEADER

Department: Parks & Recreation

Reports To: Greenspace and/or Maintenance Manager(s) as assigned

Leads Crew Of: General Laborers

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Effective Dates: 2017; 2018; PG 1/1/2019, Rev. title & duties 6-16-2025, Rev. 7/20/2026

Normal Work Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Normal Work Days: Monday through Friday



Education/Experience: High school diploma/GED and a minimum of 3 years of municipal or large commercial property landscape maintenance experience. Prefer at least 2 years of supervisory or team lead experience. An equivalent combination of training, skills, and experience may be considered.

Position Summary:
Provides leadership and direct supervision to Park Laborer crews engaged in the maintenance, repair, improvement, and operation of City parks, recreation areas, playgrounds, facilities, buildings, grounds, and equipment. Works alongside staff to perform landscape, grounds, and facility maintenance activities that support safe, functional, and attractive public spaces.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Other related duties may be assigned.

Prioritize, schedule, and coordinate landscape, mowing, facility maintenance, and related work projects. Assign work to crew members, procure materials, process work orders, and maintain project records.

Lead and work alongside labor crews to ensure assigned work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established schedules, work standards, department policies, procedures, and safety guidelines. Assist Park Manager(s) with employee training, work scheduling, performance monitoring, corrective action, and other administrative duties as assigned.

Perform and supervise general landscape maintenance activities, including mowing, planting trees, shrubs, and flowers; trimming trees and shrubbery; applying pesticides; and performing related grounds maintenance tasks.

Perform and oversee the maintenance, repair, and cleaning of parks, recreation facilities, buildings, offices, grounds, and equipment. Duties include maintaining pools and pool areas, drinking fountains, park furnishings, tennis courts, athletic fields, and recreational equipment; collecting and disposing of litter and solid waste; and supporting the overall appearance and functionality of park facilities.

Assist with the setup and breakdown of equipment and materials for City and department programs, special events, and recreational activities.

Assist with the construction and improvement of park facilities and infrastructure, including site clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation preparation.

Operate a variety of vehicles, heavy equipment, and hand and power tools used in landscape maintenance and facility operations, including trucks, trailers, mowers, tractors, skid steers, backhoes, dump trucks, string trimmers, blowers, and related equipment.

Perform routine inspection, maintenance, and minor repairs of department vehicles, equipment, tools, and machinery used in landscape, grounds, and facility maintenance operations.

Requires the ability to participate in ‘stand-by” duty and report back to work if called.

Education and Experience: High school diploma/GED and a minimum of 3 years of municipal or large commercial property landscape maintenance experience. Thorough knowledge of:

  • Basic hand and power tools and equipment
  • Operation of back hoes, dump trucks, skid steerers, and lawn mowers
  • Department policies and procedures
  • Basic knowledge of electrical and plumbing systems

Landscaping skills: Considerable knowledge of standard horticultural practices, plant materials,
chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides utilized in landscaping;



Mowing skills: Considerable knowledge of standard mowing best practices, including safety.

Landscaping tools: Competent working knowledge of the operation of a truck and trailer, skid steer, small engine equipment, power tools, and hand tools.

Mowing tools: Competent working knowledge of the operation of zero-turn mowers, tractors, string trimmers, and blowers.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate the volume of bulk materials for landscape needs.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, landscape drawings, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

Computer/Office equipment Skills: Ability to effectively utilize desktop computer software for email communications, accessing and recording data, and writing reports and related work/business documents.

Licenses: Maintain a valid driver’s license.
