Responsibilities
You will lead the DevOps strategy for the VetConnect PLUS platform by managing AWS and GCP infrastructure and mentoring a team of senior engineers. Additionally, you will collaborate with software teams to automate deployment processes and ensure high reliability across development, test, and production environments.
Requirements
Candidates must have 10+ years of experience in designing deployments and building full application stacks, specifically with Java Spring. Proficiency in coding or scripting and a strong background in Linux/Unix administration are required to succeed in this role.
Full job description
IDEXX DevOps contributes to the success of IDEXX employees and customers by providing scalable, innovative solutions and technical leadership. As part of a global Information Technology organization, our DevOps engineers are embedded with product teams — enabling fast, reliable delivery of the software that helps veterinary professionals around the world deliver exceptional care.
VetConnect PLUS is IDEXX’s platform to deliver veterinary practices a single, unified view of diagnostic results across in-house analyzers and reference laboratories — trusted by practices around the world to inform patient care every day.
As a Principal DevOps Engineer II, you bring deep technical ownership to the systems that power VetConnect PLUS — shaping the direction of its AWS and GCP infrastructure, GitHub Actions pipelines, and Datadog observability alongside a close-knit agile team. You lead from within the team: writing production infrastructure code, mentoring engineers, driving technical decisions, and solving the most complex delivery and reliability challenges. You are the go-to person for the hardest problems, the most ambiguous requirements, and the broadest operational questions — and you make the engineers around you better in the process.
Beyond your embedded role, you lead the DXSE DevOps Squad — a group of 3–4 senior DevOps engineers embedded across Diagnostic Software Engineering teams — blending hands-on engineering with squad leadership, coaching, and organizational influence. You set the standard for how DevOps is done in DXSE and champion a culture where developers and testers own their operational footprint — you accelerate their capability, not replace it.
In This Role:
You will work collaboratively with software application and engineering teams to deploy and operate our systems
You will work collaboratively with business partners with strong focus on business outcomes
You will use your Cloud experience
You will build the whole stack from ELBs to databases
You will automate and streamline operations and processes
You will build and maintain tools for deployment, monitoring and operations
You will troubleshoot and resolve issues in our dev, test and production environments
You will embrace, promote, and support frequent, incremental code testing and deployment
You will participate in on-going learning
What You Will Need to Succeed:
Your location: We are only considering those driving distance to our corporate HQ in Westbrook, Maine with the flexible hybrid requirement of only 8 days per month on-site. Alternatively, we are also open to those in NH or MA that can do on-sites less often.
10+ years of demonstrated experience designing and executing deployments with little to no outage window as well as demonstrated experience building, deploying, and configuring full application stacks (Java Spring)
Coding or scripting proficiency
Demonstrated re-engineering experience
Communicating and collaborating with others, especially across functional border
Preferred - Strong background in Linux/Unix Administration
Ability to use a wide variety of open source technologies and cloud services
Experience with SQL and MySQL (NoSQL experience is a plus)
Experience using a wide variety of open source technologies and tools
Experience creating repeatable deployment templates or similar to build services that support our various software applications
A working understanding of code and script (PHP, Python, JSON, Perl and/or Ruby)
Strong grasp of automation tools
Knowledge of best practices and IT operations in an always-up, always-available service
Financial acumen - Able to balance cost with requirements
What you can expect from us: • Base annual salary target: $140000 - $160000 (yes, we do have flexibility if needed) • Opportunity for annual cash bonus as well as yearly equity award • Health / Dental / Vision Benefits Day-One • 5% matching 401k • Additional benefits including but not limited to financial support, pet insurance, mental health resources, volunteer paid days off, employee stock program, foundation donation matching, and much more!
