Full job description

This is a first-level supervisory position. Incumbents supervise fire inspectors, including day‑to‑day scheduling and management of personnel assigned to the Bureau of Fire Prevention. Duties include conducting fire inspections, fire prevention activities, public education, fire investigations, plan examinations, training, administrative responsibilities, emergency medical response, and fire response. Incumbents also perform special projects and functional responsibilities for specific activities within and outside the fire department as assigned and approved by the Division Chief of the Bureau of Fire Prevention.

SUPERVISION RECIEVED:

Works under the general supervision of the Deputy Fire Marshal; reports to the Deputy Fire Marshal for coordinated issues specific to the division.

Supervises fire inspectors assigned to the Bureau of Fire Prevention
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The duties listed below are in addition to the essential duties and responsibilities of the Fire Inspector job description as applicable.

Provides exceptional leadership by fostering a culture of accountability, candor, inclusion, and transparency within the Bureau of Fire Prevention. Serves as a bridge between department administration and operational staff by emphasizing teamwork and camaraderie. Removes obstacles that hinder organizational progress and reinforces that safety must always take precedence over personal relationships or acceptance. Promotes an environment where constructive criticism is encouraged and continuous improvement is valued over ego, personal agendas, or reputation management. Reinforces that credibility is built on candor, competence, and transparency, and does not tolerate posturing, marginalizing individuals or groups, or self‑protective behavior.

Supervises fire inspectors in daily activities related to fire prevention, education, investigation, plan examination, training, documentation, and administrative duties. Responsibilities include scheduling assignments, providing training, conducting performance evaluations, offering feedback, developing and implementing operational policies and procedures, and overseeing equipment inspections. Performs essential duties of a fire inspector in a leadership capacity.

Facilitates and oversees the cleanliness, maintenance, and repair of emergency vehicles and facilities at the Emergency Services Complex to ensure response readiness and compliance with HCFR standards. Ensures required reports are accurate and submitted in a timely manner.

Performs specialized tasks including general and specialized fire inspections of commercial occupancies, fire alarm and sprinkler systems, commercial hoods, commercial burns, fireworks displays, and citizen complaints. Conducts code enforcement, plan examinations, and fire scene investigations, including gathering information and evidence, interviewing witnesses, and inventorying equipment.

Maintains daily inspection logs; schedules and tracks fire inspector assignments and time; completes administrative and personnel records, inspection reports, employee evaluations, and vehicle maintenance documentation.

Develops, delivers, and oversees community and department education programs on fire and life safety through presentations, demonstrations, and public events tailored to diverse audiences including schools, seniors, businesses, and civic groups. Collects and analyzes incident and casualty data to support safety initiatives.

Performs risk analysis of community safety needs, forecasts future requirements, evaluates the effectiveness of fire and life safety programs, and updates or designs programs accordingly. Participates in meetings and identifies areas with elevated fire risk.

Attends conferences, seminars, classes, meetings, and other professional development opportunities to maintain personal and professional growth. Stays current on emerging technologies, theories, and developments in fire codes, fire prevention, fire investigation, fire behavior, firefighting, personnel management, and supervisory techniques.

Leads by example by maintaining mental and physical fitness. 

Due to the nature of emergency services, all essential personnel must remain available via phone during off‑duty hours to ensure adequate and consistent staffing for routine operations and emergency situations.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

 High School Diploma or G.E.D.

 Three years experience firefighting and/or inspections.

 Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the minimum level of qualifications, stated above.

License and Certifications:

 Firefighter II Certification

 Georgia Certified Advanced EMT, EMT Intermediate, or higher

 Valid Class B Drivers License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of fire inspection, prevention, investigation, and plan examination. 

Knowledge of department rules and regulations, fire codes and ordinances, fire hazards, and investigation methods. 

Knowledge of fire chemistry. 

Knowledge of architectural and engineering terminology. 

Skill in reading and interpreting architectural and engineered drawings and plans. 

Ability to read and interpret fire code laws and regulations. 

Ability to react quickly and effectively under adverse conditions. 

Ability to establish effective working relationships with the public and with contractors. 

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. 


ADA MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Ability: Essential functions continuously require the ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing); to move about by walking; move oneself by crawling on hands and knees; ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and ramps; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching or 

navigating narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces; bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs, twisting at the waist, hips or knees; and move about on hands, knees, and feet; and move/transport items over 100lbs. Incumbents must constantly think analytically; handle stress and emotion, concentrate on tasks, remember names and other details; examine and observe details; make decisions, and 

adjust to change. Additionally, the essential functions require that incumbents be on-call and work irregular hours; attend regular work meetings and training; handle confidential information; direct others; meet deadlines; operate equipment; use a computer/keyboard; use math/calculations; and stay organized. 


 

 

Sensory Requirements: Essential functions require the ability to use effective verbal and written communication; use of hand/eye coordination and fine manipulation to use tools and equipment; and visually discern differences in color. 


Environmental Factors: Essential functions are continuously performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions including: inclement weather; extreme hot or cold temperatures; humidity and moisture; possible bodily injury from hazards including biological, chemical, sharp objects/tools, heavy machinery, traffic, falling from high or exposed places, and falling objects; constricted spaces; moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, and machinery; fumes, gasses, odors, dust, grease, oil, and mud; wet or slippery floors or surfaces and excessive noise. Incumbents will be required to work alone or with others continuously. 

Additionally, essential functions are frequently performed with exposure to bodily injury from electrical or radiation hazards. 

Essential functions may also require occasional exposure to extreme dry environments and hot temperatures.
