The role evaluates new and renewal submissions, determines acceptability, coverage, terms and pricing within delegated authority, and manages an assigned portfolio of agencies and producers. Serving as a key link among distribution partners, carrier underwriters and internal teams, the Production Underwriter improves submission quality, quote-to-bind conversion, retention and loss performance while maintaining strong compliance, file integrity and service standards.

Responsibilities:

Underwriting, Risk Selection & Pricing

• Review applications and supporting materials, including motor vehicle records, loss runs, financial statements, equipment schedules, FMCSA data, safety programs, contracts, loss-control reports and other relevant documentation.

• Evaluate each risk against program appetite, carrier guidelines and underwriting models; assess loss frequency and severity potential, operational controls and overall account quality.

• Determine appropriate coverage, limits, terms, conditions, deductibles and pricing within delegated authority; decline or refer risks when appropriate and obtain required carrier or management approvals.

• Quote new and renewal business using agency management systems and carrier rating platforms, fully utilizing available markets and meeting established turnaround and accuracy standards.

• Clearly communicate underwriting decisions, requirements and alternatives to producers, helping them understand the likelihood of acceptance and the information needed to advance a submission.

Production & Profitable Growth:

• Meet or exceed assigned new business, renewal, premium and profitability goals while maintaining disciplined underwriting standards.

• Actively manage the submission pipeline, prioritize high-potential opportunities and follow through from initial submission through quote, bind and policy issuance.

• Develop account and agency-level production plans that improve bind ratios, retention, submission quality and cross-program penetration.

• Identify growth opportunities within existing agency relationships and targeted geographies while remaining aligned with portfolio concentration and profitability thresholds.

• Gather market and competitive intelligence and share insights that may inform appetite, pricing, coverage enhancements and ease-of-doing-business initiatives.

Agency Relationships & Business Development:

• Build and maintain productive relationships with assigned retail agents, brokers, carrier partners and internal stakeholders.

• Provide responsive, professional service and serve as a trusted underwriting resource for producers throughout the submission and renewal process.

• Conduct agency visits, training sessions and periodic performance reviews focused on appetite alignment, submission completeness, production results, retention and loss trends.

• Support the identification, onboarding and activation of new agency partners based on specialization, geographic fit, production potential and historical performance.

• Represent WTU at selected agency meetings, carrier meetings, conferences and industry events, with follow-up focused on measurable pipeline and premium opportunities.

Portfolio Management, Governance & Compliance:

• Monitor assigned-book performance, including premium, loss ratios, retention, bind ratios, submission efficiency and agency concentration; recommend corrective actions when results deviate from plan.

• Partner with claims, loss control, policy service, actuarial and carrier teams to improve risk quality and address emerging portfolio issues.

• Maintain complete, accurate and consistent underwriting files and system data in accordance with WTU, carrier and regulatory standards.

• Follow all underwriting, licensing, compliance and state requirements and assist with preparation for and response to internal, carrier and regulatory audits.

• Investigate operational or underwriting issues, communicate status and recommendations to management, and support special projects as assigned.

Collaboration & Team Contribution:

• Coordinate effectively with underwriting assistants, associate underwriters and policy service personnel to deliver accurate and timely outcomes.

• Provide coaching and technical guidance to less-experienced team members and share best practices that improve workflow quality and consistency.

• Provide backup underwriting support during absences or periods of elevated volume and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

• Demonstrate and support WTU values, ethical standards, confidentiality requirements, policies and operating procedures.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Three or more years of commercial property and casualty underwriting, rating, policy service or related insurance experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex risk information, make sound underwriting decisions and balance growth with profitability.
  • Property and casualty insurance license in the applicable jurisdiction, or the ability to obtain and maintain required licensing.
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, negotiation, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience using agency management systems, carrier portals and rating tools.

Preferred Experience:

  • Commercial auto, trucking, logistics, waste or other transportation-related underwriting experience.
  • Managing General Agency, wholesale broker or program administrator experience.
