Full job description

Communications and Design Intern – Fall 2026

Common Justice is seeking a Communications and Design intern who can help the organization build upon its current social media presence and graphic design needs.

Common Justice develops and advances solutions to violence that transform the lives of those harmed and foster racial equity without relying on incarceration. Locally, we operate the first alternative-to-incarceration and victim-service programs in the United States to focus on violent felonies in adult courts. Nationally, we leverage the lessons from our direct service to transform the justice system through partnerships, advocacy, and elevating the experience and power of those most impacted. Rigorous and hopeful, we build practical strategies to hold people accountable for harm, break cycles of violence, and secure safety, healing, and justice for survivors and their communities.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is equipped with concise written and verbal communication, and excellent time-management and organizational skills. A creative outlook and collaborative spirit are musts, as well as the ability to work independently and with a group.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the creation of compelling storytelling content that highlights our mission and impact, such as drafting social media content and blogs, creating reporter lists, helping pitch outlets
  • Create graphics for the Civic Engagement and Communications teams following the Common Justice Brand Guidelines.
  • Assist the Comms team with planning, execution and analysis of media and communication strategies and campaigns.
  • Research relevant topics to discuss in our weekly news meetings.
  • Work closely with the Communications and Civic Engagement teams.

Qualifications

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Communications Design, Graphic Design, or other related field or have equivalent vocational/trade school experience.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey complex ideas in a clear and concise manner.
  • Must be comfortable working with Canva and/or Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Experience with web design is a plus.
  • A deep understanding of race, criminal justice, and social justice is a major plus.
  • Formerly incarcerated people are strongly encouraged to apply.

This is a part-time position of 15-20 hours a week from August-December 2026. Hours are flexible, and this is a hybrid internship. Only students who are United States residents and pursuing their degree within the New York City area will be considered. Candidates should also be available to come into the office once a week on Tuesdays.

Pay is $16.50/hr.

To Apply

To apply please submit a resume, dates of availability, and cover letter. If shortlisted, candidates will be asked to complete a brief assessment.
