Role Overview

The Controller will lead all accounting operations and financial reporting for a fast-paced consumer finance business. This role requires deep expertise in lending, servicing, and revenue recognition within consumer finance, along with strong technical accounting, controls, and team leadership capabilities. The Controller will be responsible for ensuring financial integrity, regulatory compliance, and scalable processes to support growth.


Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Close

  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes with a focus on accuracy and timeliness

  • Prepare and review GAAP-compliant financial statements

  • Oversee consolidation, including any SPVs, warehouse facilities, or structured finance entities

  • Ensure proper accounting for loan originations, interest income, fees, servicing revenue, expected losses, held for sale and on balance sheet loan portfolios

  • Partner with FP&A on portfolio performance and yield analysis

Controls & Compliance

  • Build and maintain strong internal controls (SOX readiness a plus)

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., CFPB, state lending regulations) as they impact financial reporting

  • Manage audits (external and internal), including preparation of audit schedules and coordination with auditors

Team Leadership

  • Lead and develop the accounting team, setting clear expectations and driving accountability

  • Establish scalable processes and systems to support business growth

  • Drive automation and efficiency across accounting operations

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Own the general ledger and accounting systems; partner with engineering/data teams where relevant

  • Implement best practices in reconciliation, reporting, and data integrity

  • Continuously improve close timelines and reporting quality

  • Manage accounting for securitizations, whole loan sales, and debt facilities

  • Work closely with CFO and FP&A to consistently incorporate business process changes into the accounting close cycle process


Qualifications

  • 8–12+ years of accounting experience, with significant time in consumer finance, fintech lending, or specialty finance

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, particularly as it applies to loan accounting, revenue recognition, and financial instruments

  • Experience with securitizations, warehouse lines, or structured finance is strongly preferred

  • CPA required

  • Proven ability to lead teams and operate in a high-growth environment

  • Strong systems experience (e.g., NetSuite or similar ERP); comfort working with large datasets

  • Big 4 accounting experience preferred
