Full job description

Salary up to £41,227 and a £2,000 South East allowance per annum, plus a generous benefits package
Based in Culham, Oxfordshire
Permanent, Full Time (37.5 hours per week)

The Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) is an armed police service that’s dedicated to the nuclear industry. Our vision is to be recognised as a provider of a world-class service for the protection of nuclear material and facilities. Given the critical nature of our work, it’s vital that we recruit skilled and knowledgeable professionals to our team. As Operational Communications Technician, you’ll play a key role in keeping our officers in constant contact with each other.

Our Operational Communications Team ensures that our front-line officers are able to communicate with each other day-to-day, and with other emergency services in the event of an incident. It will be your responsibility to support the team in providing a technical delivery function and resilience to support core activities. The nature of this role demands meticulous attention to detail and being well-equipped to handle work in a secure environment.

You'll deliver an effective business as usual service capability, as well as getting involved in a variety of projects, including the transition from Airwave to the new Emergency Services Network (ESN). You will plan, implement, and deliver specific work streams and projects, and be responsible for resolving faults and issues relating to devices fitted within vehicles or fixed positions and site-specific and specialist kit and equipment.

The role holder will provide planning, support and delivery activities relating to the Operational Communications Team scope of work, adopting and developing best practices such as ITIL, Lean Six Sigma and Prince 2 and use these to bring OC workstreams and projects to completion.

To join us, you’ll need experience within Radio Engineering (or a related technical field), it would be ideal if this were in an emergency service or similar organisation. You’ll know how to install, integrate, and maintain technical radio or communication systems, drawing on a relevant degree, an equivalent vocational qualification or relevant work experience.

In addition, you will demonstrate the ability to capture and document user and technical requirements, as well as have effective communication and team-working skills. A willingness to travel to other sites as required and a full UK driving licence are also crucial, as some of our sites are in remote locations.

Please note that this role will initially be based at our HQ Culham until our relocation to Harwell in Autumn 2026 and the role thereafter will be based at Harwell.

Above all, you’ll be making sure that our technology meets strict security requirements and complies with licence terms, both now and in the future.

Benefits of working for the CNC

  • 27.5 days annual leave (rising by 1 day after 2 years’ service, and 0.5 days ever year thereafter until a total of 32.5 days is reached) plus Bank Holidays
