Requirements

Requires a high school diploma or GED and a valid Florida driver's license, with one year of general labor experience preferred. Must obtain a Class-B CDL and complete NIMS training within six months of hire.

Full job description

Job Function:

To assist in establishing a maintenance program for City properties, i.e. buildings, sidewalks, curbs, catch basins and parking lots. This is skilled manual work in maintenance and repair tasks involving concrete work, carpentry skill for concrete form construction, and block and brick laying.

Career Path:


Essential Duties:

  1. Performs all types of manual labor related to roads and streets. 
  2. Performs all repair work on sidewalks and curbs, signs, and streets.
  3. Uses hand tools in opening and closing trenches.
  4. Must work safely in congested traffic areas with potentially dangerous equipment.
  5. Responsible for inspection and utilization of all safety equipment provided in accordance with standard operating procedures within the division.
  6. Responsible for the cleaning of buildings and reporting areas.
  7. Constructs, alters, and repairs curbing, sidewalks, catch basins, parking lots and may also lay block and brick.
  8. Makes estimates of time and materials; keeps material and activity records. 
  9. May supervise helpers.
  10. General equipment maintenance.
  11. Cleaning up of work sites after job completion.
  12. Driving of City Vehicles (A valid Florida Driver’s License is required) 
  13. Performs related functions as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the trade
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to make estimates of time and materials
  • Works from sketches and plans; understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in the care and use of tools, materials, and equipment common to the trade. 
  • Must possess a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License, class-B or higher.
  • Must be able to supervise, plan and effectively carry-out assignments relating to all types of repair work.


Required Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or GED equivalency required 
  • One (1) year experience as a general laborer preferred. 
  • A comparable amount of education and/or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Must obtain, within 6 months of hire date, a Class-B or higher Florida Commercial Driver’s License
  • Must complete the required National Incident Management System (NIMS) training within 6 months of completion of probationary period


Essential Physical Skills:

  • Ability to talk by means of spoken words.
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrections).
  • Acceptable hearing (with or with hearing aid).
  • Walking or standing for periods of time.
  • Work requires constant standing and walking, frequent lifting of 80 lbs. or more, very frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, pushing, pulling, climbing.Occasionally work around noxious fumes, chemicals. insects, and excessive noise.
  • The wearing of a back-support brace is mandatory with heavy lifting.
  • Very frequently must bend, dig, reach over head, kneel, climb ladders, stairs, hear and speak will, and make detailed inspections.
  • Must be able to operate power saw, drills, jackhammers, portable mixers, power trowels, an assortment of hand tools, edger, trowel, hand-float, bull-float, jitterbug, wheelbarrow, and a cement truck.


Environmental Conditions:

  • Works primarily in the outdoor environment and is subject to sun, heat, humidity, rain, cold, and inclement weather.
  • Works during daytime and nighttime hours.
