Wastewater Plant Mechanic

HIRING RANGE: $30.23 - $34.02 hourly

About the Position:
The Plant Mechanic is a dynamic role that involves diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining equipment and facilities. On any given day, the Plant Mechanic may perform welding activities, program and install PLCs, calibrate, repair, and maintain instruments and control systems, purchase parts and supplies, and assist with the general maintenance of facilities and grounds. We are searching for a motivated individual who is willing to learn and work as part of our highly skilled team.

About the City of Grand Junction Wastewater Services Division:
The City of Grand Junction Wastewater Division provides wastewater collection services for about 30,000 customers. Our system ensures the safe and efficient transport of wastewater from homes and businesses to treatment facilities, helping protect public health and the environment. The Wastewater Division has a staff of dedicated employees working together in areas such as Collections Operations, Lift Station Maintenance, System Inspection, and Customer Service in order to provide excellent service to our community. Our employees are responsible for monitoring and maintaining hundreds of miles of sewer line, numerous lift stations, thousands of manholes, and the infrastructure necessary to support the City’s wastewater collection system.

What You'll Do:

  • Perform maintenance and repair on water and wastewater treatment plants and related equipment and facilities.
  • Install, align, test, maintain, recondition, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and hydraulic systems, components and parts.
  • Replace piping and recondition valves.
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and servicing on equipment and facilities; pack, lubricate, clean, paint, and weld equipment.
  • Fabricate and weld parts and equipment; weld cracked or broken parts of ferrous and nonferrous metals; design, layout and fabricate new structures and parts including drilling, milling and lath work as required.

This position is a safety-sensitive position, which means you will be subject to random drug screens due to the nature of the work performed.

What We're Looking For:

  • Four (4) years of plant maintenance and repair experience. 
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver's license.
  • Some assignments in this classification may also require possession of, or the ability to obtain a Colorado Class A Commercial driver’s license and/or a Water/Wastewater Operator's D License and/or Collections/Distribution I, II, III and IV certificates.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.; supplemented by specialized training in the areas of mechanical equipment maintenance and repair. 

Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

The department is divided into Water Services—which manages water supply, treatment, distribution, irrigation, and utility billing—and Wastewater Services, which oversees collection, treatment, industrial pretreatment, and environmental laboratory functions. The department maintains critical infrastructure, including reservoirs, treatment plants, pipelines, meters, and fire hydrants, to provide high-quality drinking water and effective wastewater management.
