Who we are looking for:

ASCO is in search of a Director, Content Strategy and Brand Management to join our Integrated Marketing and Communications (ICM) Department to provide leadership and strategic oversight of a unified brand and content strategy that safeguards the mission and values for ASCO and Conquer Cancer. The Director is responsible for architecting a holistic storytelling ecoysystem, furthering the organization’s reputation as the leading authority in cancer care, driving philanthropic impact, and enhancing member engagement. This role functions as an enterprise-wide orchestrator who balances strategic brand positioning and narrative architecture with technical, high-velocity content and creative production.

Remote candidates welcome or at primary location in Alexandria, VA.

Responsibilities

Content Strategy and Governance

  • Drive an integrated, channel-agnostic digital, multimedia storytelling strategy that elevates the organization's reputation as a timely, trusted authority in cancer care and accelerates philanthropic impact.
  • Drive collaboration with digital channel leads, global program strategy teams, enterprise communications, and public affairs teams on the strategic input, distribution, and performance of content across web, email, social media, and digital advertising platforms.
  • Manage the high-visibility campaign review ecosystem, unifying editorial copy approvals from the content strategy function with visual design direction from the brand function.
  • Establish, maintain, and enforce comprehensive content governance plans, lifecycle standards, quality guardrails, and taxonomy frameworks across a centralized content ecosystem to maximize cross-promotion, compliance, and strategic alignment with business objectives.
  • Foster structured collaboration with the Performance Marketing team to ensure all digital, multimedia content leverages keyword and SEO insights to effectively maximize audience reach.
  • Play a pivotal role in the development, implementation, and continuous optimization of agile content workflows, team processes, and division standard operating procedures.

Content and Creative Operations

  • Partner with the IT department as the primary stakeholder to drive the architecture, organization, and ICM-wide adoption of the Digital Asset Management System (DAMS).
  • Define operational guardrails, copyright compliance workflows, and ethical standards for the team's use of approved generative AI tools within creative and editorial pipelines.
  • Hold ultimate accountability for routine visual and message-compliance audits across all digital properties and materials to identify and correct deviations from brand guidelines.
  • Oversee the management of ASCO’s staff brand portal, self-service toolkits, and accessible templates to empower staff to create brand-aligned content independently.
  • Champion department-wide education initiatives and professional development opportunities for the broader ICM staff to elevate digital content and design best practices across the enterprise.
  • Manage the branding and content operational budgets, directing activities and contracts with external agencies, and serve as the chief point of contact with ASCO’s legal team for brand-related issues.
  • Supervise, mentor, and synchronize the daily efforts of the Content Strategy and Brand Management team while continuously infusing fresh communication trends, remaining agile enough to directly execute copywriting, brand positioning assets, or multimedia development when operational volumes demand hands-on support.

Visual Storytelling and Management

  • Create and oversee the long-term visual storytelling strategy, vision, priorities, and value propositions for ASCO and Conquer Cancer entities and brand families.
  • Oversee brand staff member in aligning all enterprise-wide marketing and digital communication activities to ensure consistent execution across the organization.
  • Collaborate closely with marketing strategists, stakeholders, and market research staff to translate research and member data into relevant, engaging brand experiences that align with evolving member and donor-audience needs.

Required Education and Experience
