The Network Technician is responsible for the installation, operation, and maintenance of various telecommunications systems including VoIP switches, Ethernet switches, and transport systems. They also provide technical support, resolve network faults, and manage customer service trouble tickets within the Network Operations Center.
Candidates must have a high school diploma, a valid driver's license, and four years of relevant training or experience in a telephone apprentice program. The role requires the ability to travel to remote locations and pass pre-employment suitability and drug screenings.

The compensation range for this job is:
$45.31 - $51.03Network technician’s primary duties are installation, operation, administration, and maintenance of Digital and VoIP Telephone Switches, Transport Systems (both network and CPE), DLC’s, PBX’s, Ethernet Switches, Cell Sites, Central Office power systems, and the network management platforms used to monitor their performance and availability.
Provide customer service, troubleshooting, educate customers on available ACS products and services, provision and de-provision products and services. Answer customer inquiries.
Determine cable distribution to fulfill service requirements. Run, secure and terminate necessary cabling.
Place equipment cabinets, racks, or supporting frame work. Accomplish all inter-cabinet wiring.
Install associated sets and sub-sets of business systems.
Install associated power equipment and make necessary distribution.
Install and provision system programming.
Perform all facets of fault location of PBX, PAX, Key, VoIP telephone or special circuits to restore degraded or out-of-service conditions.
Conduct system or sub-system testing as required to determine failures or to accomplish routine maintenance tests.
Perform preventative maintenance and database backups
Install, maintain, and modify PBX and Key Systems.
Installation and configuration of vendor specific cards and equipment
Identify, research and resolve software and switch issues daily
Use applicable interface devices and appropriate test equipment to monitor digital central offices and associated facilities.
Make decisions and take actions to insure uninterrupted service.
Respond to system messages and associated alarms to determine the root cause of network problems and to take appropriate corrective action.
Analyze switch performance, system faults, customer reports, initiating corrective actions when necessary.
Perform routine testing both on site and from remote test facilities, sometimes coordinating with other departments, customers, and other interconnecting telco personnel.
Maintain technical documentation, office records, drawings, archived printouts, and site logs.
Interpret and input complex software translation changes for system upgrades.
Perform preventative maintenance and database backups.
Installation, configuration and provisioning of all Remote and Central Office equipment.
Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain Central Office equipment and wiring.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Perform all associated installation, maintenance and testing on private line and special circuit equipment, digital access cross connect systems, T-carrier, fiber optic terminal and multiplexer equipment.
Install, align, and maintain line treatment equipment associated with data and analog circuits. Installation and maintenance of central office and customer premise equipment to include but not limited to: WAN/LAN Ethernet switches, routers, servers and VTC equipment.
Perform all line conditioning testing; along with end-to0end tests for installation of data transport equipment from the Central Office to customer premise, utilizing a variety of basic and complex test equipment, and switch and system based testing facilities to ensure proper installation and testing of new systems.
Coordinate installation activities with all customers and departments to include manufacturers if required to a successful completion. Make cross-connect changes and re-arrangement on MDF’s, digital cross connect panels, and fiber distribution frames as required. Interpretation of engineering specifications, schematics, and drawings associated with AK Communications network and CPE installations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Responsible for monitoring the network, and are critical to resolving customer service trouble issues and verifying with customers that their issues are resolved.
Receive phone calls and accept trouble tickets/reports from our Tier I trouble resolution team, managed and strategic customers, Wireless roaming partners, Tier III workgroups and other sources.
Responsible for the customer’s trouble and manages communication with the customer from the time the report/ticket is received until the issue is resolved.
Use a variety of systems and tools to isolate the customer’s trouble and either resolve or escalate the issue to the appropriate Tier III resource for resolution. In addition to Tier II customer support responsibilities, the CNST will operate the Alaskan Network Operation Center.
Receive and resolve all Tier II support escalations for ACS products and services. Examples of products and services include but are not limited to ACS offerings in Wireline, Wireless, Enterprise, Internet and Long Distance suites.
Engineer, operation, administration and support of OSS/BSS equipment and databases.
Configuration Management of operating systems of network equipment and support servers used within the Network Operations Center.
Installation, Troubleshooting and Problem solving of systems, desktops, and equipment used in delivering services by the NOC.
Perform other duties as assigned.
You must have a high school diploma and must possess and maintain a driver’s license. Network Technicians are normally required to have and maintain vendor specific training and/or certifications.
Network Technicians are required to have four (4) years training in a relevant telephone apprentice program or equivalent experience leading to journeyman level performance in this specialty, with two (2) years experience in the skills and work this position will typically perform.
This position may travel by Air, Land and Sea by commercial and non-commercial means to deliver service to Alaska Communications Customers located in remote areas of Alaska.
External applicants must successfully pass a pre-employment suitability assessment and either a DOT or non-DOT drug test, depending on position.
Network Technicians outside of Anchorage, may be required to perform duties of a Field Technician, which may require a Medical Certification or a CDL.
