Substation Construction Equipment Installer Apprentice
Reports to: Substation Construction, Equipment Installer Foreman
Location: Hybrid: Transmission Construction Complex, 205 Southfield Parkway, Forest Park, GA
Job Summary
The Substation Equipment Installer Apprentice will support all major equipment installation required for substation projects that are part of the Georgia Power Transmission capital investment portfolio. This includes constructing and assembling transformers and breakers according to Southern Company standards and/or manufacturer specifications/procedures to ensure quality standards are maintained in a field environment. Apprentices will learn to read blueprints, decipher schematic diagrams, install mechanical and electrical parts, operate vacuum trailers, oil pumps, use boom lifts/ladders, cranes, hand tools and electric/pneumatic/hydraulic tooling to complete their tasks.
This position is subject to emergency overtime work, scheduled overtime work, and storm restoration response.
This position is a physically demanding position, works four, ten-hour days (Monday-Thursday 7:00am-5:30pm) and may require overnight and out-of-town stays during the week near the construction site. Depending on work location, you could work away from home as many as 200 nights per year cumulative not consecutive nights
NOTE: This position has statewide responsibilities, and frequent travel within the state of Georgia is required – up to 100% of the time.

Construction machinery such as skid steers, excavators, back hoes, cranes or heavy load rigging and lifting
Transmission substation equipment and installation work to include bus fabrication, foundation installation, print reading and layout, switch installation, structure grounding or other substation construction skills
All construction jobs require extended overnight stays and travel throughout the state of Georgia
Must possess a valid driver's license or be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 6 months of employment
Note: Any candidate who holds a current CDL will require verification with current and past employers upon job offer
To be considered for an interview, candidates must pass a pre-employment CAST test (basic mechanical aptitude) and POET (physical aptitude).

Additional Information
Travel Compensation Options for Expenses
Per diem payments and travel or lodging expense options are provided through agreements between IBEW Local 84 and Georgia Power Company. These options will be communicated during New Employee Orientation.
This position is covered under the Memorandum of Agreement between Georgia Power Company and the IBEW Local No. 84 which includes a pay increase every six months until you reach the maximum compensation rate in your job classification if expectations are met. Currently there is a cost-of-living increase annually negotiated with IBEW 84. This position is subject to call-out overtime work, scheduled overtime work, and storm restoration response. Under the Memorandum of Agreement, candidates hired as Apprentice Installers into Section 6C are required to fulfill a 1- year obligation before they are eligible to bid into other Section inside Section 6.
Pre-Employment Testing
To be considered for an interview, candidates must pass:
The Construction and Skilled Trades Exam (CAST test).
Interview
If invited to an interview, candidates will be required to travel to a designated location in Georgia (most likely the Atlanta area). Candidates will not be paid for time or travel to complete these pre-employment tests and interview.

Weight Restriction/Entry to Transformer/Breaker Tanks
Because of the nature of our work and weight restrictions on our equipment a candidate must currently weigh and maintain their body weight at or below 325 pounds fully dressed including steel-toed work boots and hardhat
Candidates must be able to access an 18” manhole and ability to work in confined areas
Travel and Working Conditions
This position is physically demanding and typically follows a four-day, ten-hour work schedule. Overnight and out-of-town stays are required near construction sites, and employees may be away from home up to 200 nights per year on an accumulated, non-consecutive basis.
Starting Compensation
This is a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Georgia Power Company and IBEW Local 84. Union membership is optional. Current starting pay is $35.67 hourly and is not negotiable.
Training and Development
Equipment Apprentice Installers in Transmission Construction will undergo an extensive training program, including classroom and on-the-job training. The training program lasts approximately 3 years.
Upon successful completion of the training, the employee is eligible to bid on Equipment Installer positions as they become available.
